The meaning of industrial revolution

The industrial revolution was a period of

scientific and technological development in
the 18th century that transformed largely
rural, agrarian societies—especially in europe
and north america—into industrialized, urban
ones

Industry 1.0: The First Industrial
Revolution

The late 18th century saw transition to new

manufacturing processes. Until that time, man
was the main driving force of labor. Gradually,
the industrial revolution replaced human labor
with machines. These machines were powered
by water and steam .
Industry 2.0: The Second
Industrial Revolution

It began with the introduction of electricity

with Thomas Edison and motors and
assemble line production. Operations were
made more efficient than machinery powered
by water and steam. Mass production and
assembly line were in. Manufacturing
industry saw new terms like lean
manufacturing, Just-in-time, etc.
Industry 3.0: The Digital Revolution

This revolution began 1970 with advances in electronics and

invention & manufacturing of electronic devices like transistors,
memory programmable controls and computers. Processes were
automated and human assistance was minimized or removed.
Also, the software systems and processes were developed like
Enterprise Resource Planning(ERP), product flow scheduling and
shipping logistics were built. Supply chain management concept
formalized during this time.
INDUSTRY 4.0 : DIGITALISATION

We are currently in this phase of Industrial evolution. It is

changing the way we connected and exchanged
information. Powered by information, communication
technologies, and use of cyber-physical systems, it has
introduced concept of connected devices (IoT), cloud
computing, additive manufacturing, robotics, augmented
reality, smart factories, data analytics and artificial
intelligence technologies to further automate the
processes.
This exchange of information is made
possible with the Industrial Internet of things
(IIoT) as we know it today. Key elements of

algorithms.
Cloud computing — offsite network hosting
and data backup.
Cognitive computing — technological
platforms that employ artificial intelligence
Industry 5.0: The Human-Centered Factory

It talks about personalization. Post the automation and

removal of human intervention in manufacturing
processes, human touch would be back in
manufacturing. It would be a synchronization and
utilisation of the technological advancement and
cognitive and thinking skills of humans to provide a
personalised experience.
The term Industry 5.0 refers to people working alongside robots and smart machines. It’s
about robots helping humans work better and faster by leveraging advanced technologies
like the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data. It adds a personal human touch to the Industry
4.0 pillars of automation and efficiency.
Industry 5.0 is aimed at supporting – not superseding – humans.
Industry 5.0 is about finding the optimal balance of efficiency and productivity.
