ROLL NO. : 23 CLASS : 6 “A” CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS 1. MICRO COMPUTERS These computers are small in size and cost less. They are usually designed for personal use, therefore, they are also called Personal Computers or PCs. Examples : Commodore 64, IBM PC. They are mainly used in homes, schools, offices, shops, banks, etc. 2. MAINFRAME COMPUTERS These computers are very powerful. They are big in size with a large memory and high speed. The processing speed of a mainframe computer is measured in millions of instructions per second (MIPS). They are designed to tackle huge amount of data. More than hundred users can use a mainframe computer simultaneously. These computers are used in networked environment. Mainframe computers are very expensive and mainly used for bulk data processing in large business organisations, universities, banks, scientific laboratories, airline, and railway ticket reservations, stock exchange markets etc. Examples : IBM Z series, PDP-10 and SystemZ10 2. SUPER COMPUTERS They are the most powerful computers with a huge processing speed. These computers are used for weather forecasting, space research, satellite control etc. The performance of a supercomputer is commonly measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPS) instead of MIPS. Examples : Fugaku, Pratyush, Mihir, PARAM Brahma, Cray XC50 etc. VARIOUS KINDS OF FILE FORMATS .ODT .ODT files are text documents that are similar to DOCX files. However, these files can be opened in open-source word processor programs, such as Open office. This is useful when you’re sharing files with others who may not have Microsoft Office. .PDF .PDF files protects text and images within the document, allowing information to be distributed in an inalterable form. They’re nearly universal file types, in that they can be opened on almost any modern device. PDFs can also contain unalterable watermarks to further protect original documentation. .DOC and .DOCX .DOC and . DOCX are the standard file format of Microsoft Word documents. DOCX files are XML-based DOC files. In newer versions of Word, files are saved as the DOCX format By default. .TXT .TXT files are the most basic plain text file format available. TXT files allow users to create text-based documents without worrying about formatting, font style, or text colour. .HTML AND .HTM .HTML and .HTM are the standard mark up language used when creating web pages. When opened in a text editor, like Sublime. HTML and HTM files allow HTML code to be edited. When opened in a web browser, the web page the code creates is presented.
