WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?

Geothermal energy is a
sustainable and renewable
energy resource that uses the
heat stored beneath the earth's
surface to generate power or
provide heating and cooling. It
relies on the natural heat
emanating from the earth's
core, which is continuously
replenished by processes such
as radioactive decay and
residual heat from the planet's
formation
How does geothermal energy work

Hot water is pumped from deep underground through a

well under high pressure. when the water reaches the
surface, the pressure is dropped , which causes the
water to turn into steam .the steam spins a
turbine ,which is connected to a generator that
Ways to utilize geothermal energy
o Geothermal Power Generation: This involves extracting
hot water or steam from underground reservoirs and
using it to power turbines, which in turn generate
electricity.
Ways to utilize geothermal energy
o Direct Use Applications: Geothermal energy is directly used for
heating buildings, greenhouses, swimming pools, and
industrial processes. Hot water or steam from
underground reservoirs is circulated through pipes to transfer
heat without electricity generation.
Ways to utilize geothermal energy
o Geothermal Heat Pumps: These systems use the Earth's constant
temperature just below the surface to heat or cool buildings.
Geothermal heat pumps circulate a fluid through underground
pipes, absorbing heat in the winter and releasing it in the
summer, providing efficient heating and cooling for
residential and commercial buildings.

HOW MUCH DOES THE GEOTHERMAL COST?
While there is no such thing as free
energy, geothermal heating and
cooling systems, along with solar
panels, are as close as you can get.
Harnessing the constant temperature
of the ground, geothermal systems
use less energy than traditional
systems, saving on energy costs and
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
So, for a geothermal heating and
cooling system, the average low cost
is $17,000, the average middle cost is
$24,500, and the average high cost is
$32,300.
The effect of geothermal energy on home bills
The graph shows the impact of switching to
geothermal energy on heating fuel and
electricity bills:
• Before geothermal energy:
 High heating fuel bills (blue).
 Relatively lower electricity bills
(yellow).
• After implementing geothermal energy:
 Significant decrease or elimination of
heating fuel costs.
 Noticeable increase in electricity bills,
almost doubling.
 Conclusion :
While heating fuel costs decrease or
disappear entirely, there's a substantial
increase in electricity bills. However,
transitioning to geothermal energy offers
long-term benefits like reduced reliance on
fossil fuels and a lower environmental

Switching to geothermal energy can lead to

substantial savings on heating and cooling costs
compared to using fuel oil. Geothermal systems
harness the Earth's natural heat, providing
efficient heating and cooling solutions. By making
this transition, not only can you reduce your
energy bills, but you can also decrease your
reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more
sustainable future.
