their organs are kept viable by ventilators or
other mechanical device until they can be
excised for transplantation

▪ Donated hearts based on medical urgency, blood type
compatibility, size match and waiting list time.
▪ A donated heart can only remain outside of the body for
about four hours to 6 hours before it must be transplanted.

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

▪ The kidney is the most commonly transplanted organ.
▪ Stored upto 24-36hrs after death
▪ It takes 6 weeks for kidneys to work after transplant.
LIVER TRANSPLANT

▪ Hepatitis C is the most common cause of liver failure
leading to liver transplantation.
▪ A liver donated by an adult can often be split and
transplanted into two people.
▪ liver can be stored upto 9-27 hrs
▪ Liver transplant will enable the individual to kive upto 30
years and above
LUNG TRANSPLANT
Quick Facts:
▪ The most common type of lung transplant is a single lung
transplant.
▪ Lungs from pediatric and adolescent donors are offered first to
pediatric and adolescent patients.
▪ Lungs have to be taken upto 6 hrs after death
CORNEAS
▪ The cornea is the clear layer on the front of the eye. It is one
of the most common transplants done with a very high
success rate.
▪ Cornea should be taken out before 48 hrs.
BONE/TENDONS
▪ Blood testing: Blood Type Test The first test establishes your
ABO blood type. The Rh type (+, -) is not a factor in donor
matching.
▪ Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) The second test, which is
a blood test for human leukocyte antigens (HLA), is called
tissue typing.
▪ Crossmatch: Throughout your life, your body makes
substances called antibodies that act to destroy foreign
materials. You may make antibodies each time you have an
infection, are pregnant, have a blood transfusion or undergo
a kidney transplant. final crossmatch also is performed
within 48 hours before the transplant.
▪ Serology Blood testing is conducted for potentially
transmissible diseases, such as human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV), hepatitis and cytomegalovirus (CMV)
ABSOLUTE CONTRA-INDICATIONS OR
ORGAN DONATION:
▪ The removal of the tissue or organ does not impair the heath or
functional integrity of the donor
▪ The benefits expected to be given to the recipient bear an
acceptable proportion to the harm likely to be caused the donor.
▪ The donation should be altruistic and is given without any coercion
or any other form of external pressure.
▪ The donor must be fully informed of the nature of the procedure and
the possible complications, if any. This entails the need for follow up
of the donors health in the future.
▪ The view of close relatives such as the spouse or adult children are
taken into account.
▪ There must be no elements of commercialization in the donation.
