INTRODUCTION TO TURBINES
Definition:-

Hydraulic machines,
specifically turbines, are
mechanical devices designed
to convert the energy of
flowing water into mechanical
energy.
An overview of how
turbines work?

•Turbines are mechanical devices that

harness the energy of flowing water,
steam, or gas to generate rotational
motion. As fluid flows through the
turbine, it pushes against blades
attached to a shaft, causing them to
spin.
BASIC COMPONENTS OF A
TURBINE:-

•A turbine generally consists of 4

basic components :-
1. Stator Blades
2. Rotor Blades
3. Shaft
4. Casing
Tail race:- channel carrying water away from the turbines.
Head race:- water flowing from the reservoir to turbine.
Gross Head:- The difference between the head race level and
tail race level when no water is flowing is known as Gross
head. It is denoted by ‘Hg’.

Net Head:- It is also called as Head available at inlet

Definitions of of turbine. When water is flowing from head to race to
Heads and the turbine, a loss of head due to frictional force of
water and penstocks occurs.
Efficiencies of
a turbine:-
Efficiencies of turbine:-
HYDRAULIC EFFICIENCY(nh):- it is defined as the ration of power given by water to the runner of turbine to the
power supply given to the water at inlet of the turbine.

MECHANICAL EFFICIENCY: The ratio of the power available at the shaft of the turbine to the power delivered to
the runner is defined as mechanical efficiency:

VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY:- The volume of the water striking the runner of a turbine is slightly
greater than the volume of the water supplied to the turbine. The ratio of the volume of the water
usually striking the runner to the volume of water supplied to the turbine is defined as volumetric
efficiency.
CLASSIFICATION OF TURBINES:-

The turbines are classified on the basis of type of energy

available at the inlet of turbine, direction of flow through the
vanes.
1)According to the energy at inlet:-
Impulse turbine and Reaction turbine
2) According to direction of flow through runner(or) vane:-
Tangential flow turbine, Radial flow turbine, Axial flow turbine,
Mixed flow turbine.
IMPULSE TURBINE:- If at the inlet of turbine, the energy available is only
kinetic energy the turbine is called impulse turbine. Ex;- Pelton wheel turbine

REACTION TURBINE:- If at the inlet of turbine the water possesses kinetic energy
as well as pressure energy then the turbine is called reaction turbine. Ex- Kaplan
turbine.
