Sources of Air Pollution

What is Air Pollution?

Air pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances and

pollutants in the earths atmosphere. These pollutants are present
around us in either solid, liquid or gaseous forms. Air pollutants are
responsible for negatively affecting air quality leading to different
threats to our ecosystem.
Sources of Air Pollution

How do these pollutants actually arise?

Their are various sources of air pollution. The most common ones being;

 Industrial Emissions
 Vehicle Exhausts
 Natural Events { these events are NOT anthropogenic}
Sources of Air Pollution

How is INDUSTRIAL EMISSIONS responsible

for Air Pollution?

Industrial Emission is one of the many anthropogenic cause of Air

Pollution. Although not all industries are responsible and add to the
air contamination but the rest such as Cement Industries, Gas
Industries and Coal Industries highly add to air pollution because of
their harmful pollutants released in environment.
Sources of Air Pollution

How is Vehicular Exhaust responsible for AIR

POLLUTION?
Vehicular Exhaustion can be one of the most common
anthropogenic cause of Air contamination vehicular
exhaustion actually refers to pollutants released from cars,
busses tractors etc. According to reports in developed country
one person atleast owns two cars whereas in developing
countries , people use inappropriate vehicles for transportation
which cause chemicals to get released in air causing serious air
pollution.
Sources of Air Pollution
What are the NATURAL CAUSES of Air Pollution?
Air Pollution by natural causes mainly refers to the Natural Disaster
examples being
1. Volcanic Eruptions; When volcanoes erupt, it releases harmful
particles, including volcanic gases and ash into the air. It releases
volcanic gases such as carbon and sulpher dioxide which add to the
pollutants harming living population badly.

2. Wildfires; Wildfires or forest fires are mainly caused due to friction of dry
leaves which lead to large fire in that particular area. Wildfires add to
pollution by releasing toxic chemical gases in the environment
alongside harming animal life and property.

RADIOACTIVE NOISE POLLUTION-
radioactive pollution is defined as the increase in natural
background radiation, emerging from the activities of man
using naturally occurring or artificially produced radioactive
materials
TYPES OF RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION
Environmental radiation is divided into two sources-
Natural
Man-made radiation
a)Natural-
cosmic radiation from outer space reaching the surface of the
earth.
b)Man-made
production of nuclear weapons,
radioactive material used in bombs
We are aware of the impact of
radioactivity on man and the
environment during the Second World
War when the US dropped atom bombs
on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in
August 1945
Radioactive waste disposal pollutes the environment. High-level nuclear waste products can
persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Nuclear reactor leakage pollutes the
environment. The leak could kill several people, as happened on April 26, 1986 at the
CHERNOBYL Atomic Reactor in the former USSR.
