ACTUAL SIMPLE

RANKINE CYCLE
MODULE 5
DISCUSSION
ACTUAL RANKINE CYCLE

Rankine Cycle is said to be actual and irreversible due to the presence

of one or all the following conditions:
• Pressure drop at the steam generator process and or pressure drop
on the steam line (process 4 to 1) or p1 < p4.
• Turbine expansion process is irreversible and not isentropic (s1 ≠
s2).
• Pressure drop at the condenser (p2 > p3) and or sub-cooling liquid
occurs at the condenser outlet.
• Pumping process is irreversible, or pump is inefficient.

EXAMPLES
EXAMPLES

In a Rankine cycle, steam enters the turbine at 10 MPa

and 600 °C, and exhaust at a condenser pressure of 200
kPa. The mass flow rate of the throttled steam is 25 kg/s.
For an actual Rankine cycle, where the turbine efficiency is
90% and the pump efficiency is 65%. Calculate the actual
cycle efficiency.

EXAMPLES
In a Rankine cycle, saturated liquid water at 1 bar is
compressed isentropically to 150 bar. First by heating in a
boiler, and then by superheating at constant pressure of 150
bar, the water is brought to 750 K. After adiabatic
expansion in a turbine to 1bar, it is then cooled in a
condenser to saturated liquid. If the turbine and pump
efficiencies are 90% and 70%, respectively, what is the
actual cycle efficiency?

In a Rankine cycle, steam enters the turbine at 12 MPa
and 700 °C, and exhaust at a condenser pressure of
250 kPa. The mass flow rate of the throttled steam is 30
kg/s. For an actual Rankine cycle, where the turbine
efficiency is 92% and the pump efficiency is 67%.
Calculate the actual cycle efficiency.
In a Rankine cycle, saturated liquid water at 2 bar is
compressed isentropically to 250 bar. First by heating in a
boiler, and then by superheating at constant pressure of 250
bar, the water is brought to 850 K. After adiabatic
expansion in a turbine to 2 bar, it is then cooled in a
condenser to saturated liquid. If the turbine and pump
efficiencies are 88% and 68%, respectively, what is the
actual cycle efficiency?
