METALS AND NON METALS

metals

A metal is a chemical element that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat and forms cations and ionic bonds with non-metals
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE METALS ARE:

PHYSICAL STATE HARDNESS LUSTRE DENSITY MELTING AND BOILING POINT MALLEABILITY DUCTILITY TENSILE STRENGTH CONDUCTIVITY SONOROUS

PHYSICAL STATE : Metals are generally solid at room

temperature except mercury and gallium which exist in liquid form at room temperature. HARDNESS : Metals are generally hard. Hardness varies from metal to metal. Metals like sodium and potassium are soft and can be easily cut with a knife. LUSTRE : Metals shine in their pure state, This shining property of metals is called metallic lustre.Gold is yellow and copper is brown. Magnesium, aluminium and silver appear white because of ability of metals to shine and reflect light they are used for making jewellery etc. DENSITY : Metals have high density.

MELTING AND BOILING POINT:

Metals generally have high melting and Boiling point.

MALLEABILITY:The property by which metals can

Beaten into sheets or foils is called malleability. Gold and silver are the best malleable metals. DUCTICITY: The property by which metals can be drawn into wires is called ductility. Silver, copper etc. are highly ductile metals. CONDUCIVITY: Some metals are good Conductors of heat and electricity like

Silver.

uses of metals
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. SILVER,GOLD ETC. ARE USED FOR MAKING JEWELLERY MERCURY IS USED FOR MAKING THERMOMETERS. COPPER ETC. ARE USED TO MAKE WIRES. METALS ARE USED FOR MAKING UTENSILS. IRON IS USED FOR MAKING HOUSES ETC.

There are very few non-metals as compared to metals Some of them are sulphur, diamond, iodine, hydrogen, oxygen THE PHYSICIAL PROPERTIES OF NON-METALS ARE:
THE PHYSICIAL STATE BRITTLENESS MALLEABILITY DUCTILITY ELECTRICAL AND THERMAL CONDUCTANCE SOFTNESS MELTING AND BOILING POINT DENSITY

PHYSICAL STATE BRITTLENESS:sulphur and phosphorus are brittle non metals. MALLEABILITY; Non- metals are non malleable, this means they cannot be
beaten into sheets.

DUCTILITY: Non-metals are non-ductile, they cannot be drawn into wires. ELECTRICAL AND THERMAL CONDUCTANCE: Except graphite all nonmetals are poor conductors of heat and electricity. SOFTNESS: Except diamond which is the hardest natural substance known, all other non-metals are soft . MELTING AND BOILING POINT: Non-metals usually have low melting point. DENSITY: Non-metals are light and have low densities.

USES OF NON-METALS

POWDERED GRAPHITE IS USED AS A DRY LUBRICANTS CHLORINE IS USED FOR WATER PURIFICATION. PHOSPHOROUS IS USED FOR SMOKE SCREENS SULPHUR IS USED FOR MAKING PLASTICS DYES ETC. PHOSPHOROUS IS USED FOR MANUFACTURING FERTILIZERS.
