INTRODUCTION
• A manufacturing process is the set of operations required to modify the characteristics
of raw materials. This transformation can be of different nature, both in shape, density,
strength, size, aesthetics, etc., performing in the field of industry.

• The importance of the approach from a global view of the product, allowing a clear
identification of all the inputs/outputs that involve environmental impact, not only
limited to our production line or a particular stage of the cycle, applying environmental
measures in all its manufacturing.

• The concept of sustainable manufacturing has undergone profound changes in

professional disciplines, and specifically in engineering
2.COVID -19 PANDEMIC (MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES IMPACT ON
ENVIRONMENT)

• The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in new challenges for the manufacturing industry spanning
from ensuring safe work environments for employees to meeting sharp rises in consumer demand
while coping with a volatile supply chain. To meet the rising demand for personal protective
equipment (PPE)

• While the long term impacts of the COVID-19 virus on human health are still unknown, a negative
impact to the environment is almost assured unless we factor sustainability into our decisions
today.

• Crisis response resulted in world-wide mass production of single-use and other disposable products
such as gloves, robes, masks, face shields, and other equipment. This massive source of plastic
waste could become an environmental disaster if not managed effectively.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF FACTORIES AND HOW CAN
THEY IMPROVE IT
• Reduce water consumption

• Perform an energy audit

• Replace outdated equipment

• Switch to renewable energy sources

4.SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM
• A sustainable manufacturing system is that the manufacturing system, usually oriented product, which
has been designed by introducing environmental factors (eco-design), taking into account not only the
stage of manufacturing the product, but also for all stages of the cycle of life, from the procurement of
resources, until the final treatment and recycling once their useful life.
• The objective is the search of a sustainable development, the construction of a new development model
to allow the maintenance of a life quality, without causing an irreparable damage to the planet, being this
the basis of the industrial ecology.
• The evolution of applying the concept of sustainable manufacturing, throughout the entire product life is
becoming the reference point of any environmental management system, acquiring greater importance on
quality standards and economic viability. From this, starts the idea of a total quality and environmental
management systems as a necessary part of management in the company, come into scene the
Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001, as a reference for application, in addition to the
rules of quality standards ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18000 occupational safety
CONCLUSION
• There is a need for technologies and strategies that will reduce environmental impact from
manufacturing globally. This paper presents an industrial case study with three objects of study
where manufacturing of „green‟ products are analysed and solutions are presented on reducing
environmental impact from manufacturing. The objects represent a conceptual product, a
manufacturing ready product and an update of an existing product.
• The case study also builds the base for presenting a draft analysis scheme for designing a more
environmentally sustainable production system. The examples and the proposed analysis scheme
are discussed in the context of designing a socially, economically and environmentally
sustainable production system.
