GREEN TEA

INTRODUCTION
 It is produced from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant.(2)
Green tea is produced by drying and steaming tea leaves to prevent
fermentation.(2)
Among teas, about 20% is green tea consumed in Asia and the Middle East.(2)
Green tea is mostly grown in Japan, China, and Taiwan. The main difference
between green tea and black tea is the technological process of their
production. The most popular type of green tea consumed is Sencha, most often
made in Japan. After proper treatment Bancha, Matcha and Gyokuro types are
made from Sencha tea.(3)
EFFECTS
Green tea has been shown to have anticarcinogen, anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and is beneficial for cardiovascular
disease (CVD), diabetes and obesity, and neurological and oral health. (2)
Anticarcinogenic properties include controlling cell proliferation, apoptosis and
angiogenesis in tumor cells.(5)
Green tea can exert a preventive effect on various types of cancer, including
lung, esophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreatic, breast, prostate or bladder
cancers. (3)

neurodegenerative diseases. (3)
Anti-Cancer Effect of Green Tea and Its
Content
Catechins are important components in green tea that show antimicrobial
properties. (2)
The higher the catechin content in tea, the higher the antioxidant activity.
Compared to black tea, green tea has a much higher catechin content. (2)
Green tea contains more catechins than other teas, mainly because of the way it
is processed after harvest.(3)
The four main catechins occurring in green tea are (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-
epicatechin-3-gallate (EKG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-
gallate (EGCG) .(2)

RESULTS
Green tea and its main component, EGCG, have been shown to have anti-
inflammatory effects through cellular, animal and human experiments. (1)
Since green tea and EGCG have multiple targets and act in a pleiotropic
manner, we may consider their usage to improve the quality of life in patients
with inflammatory disease. (1)
All in all, polyphenols, and especially the main catechin of green tea, EGCG,
brings promising results in the prevention of breast, lung, prostate, stomach,
and pancreatic cancers.(3)
