GREEN HOSPITALS
The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines a green building
as, "the practice of creating structures and using processes that are
environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's
life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance,
renovation, and deconstruction. This practice expands and complements the
classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and
comfort.

According to Indian Green Building Council “A green hospital is the one that
enhances patients well being, aids in curative process while utilizing natural
resources in and efficient, environment friendly manner.”

.
Components of green hospitals
1.Energy savings: switching to compact fluorescent and
light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs, using optimum
temperature for the HVAC system, using energy-
efficient products, reducing the stand-by time of the
medical equipment

2.Greener source for creating energy: using natural and

renewable sources of such as solar, wind, and geo-
thermal.

3.Reduce waste management: minimising waste through

composting, recycling, and disposing of it the right way.
COMPONENTS of GREEN HOSPITALS
4.Lighting:using light sensors in the passage or washrooms and other
areas which can detect occupancy and installing low-energy LED
lights.

5. Saving water:must have a rain harvesting system in place and sewage

treatment to recycle water for non-drinking use. The recycled water
can be used for irrigation, cleaning activities, etc to meet the high
water demands of hospitals

6.Air quality:This can be achieved by indoor plants, natural air

purifiers, etc
Benefits achieved by green hospitals
1. Better indoor air quality

2. 20-40%energy savings

3. 35-40%water savings

4. Good day lighting

5. No sick building syndrome

6. Faster patient recovery
