Deserts
• Desert climates are hot and dry, seemingly the worst possible
environment for plant and animal life. Many plants and animals are
able to adapt to desert temperatures and conditions. These plants
and animals can tolerate lack of water, store water in their bodies,
and reduce or tolerate high temperatures.
How animals and plants adapt to the climate
of desert:
• Water Storage
Plants and animals that live in the desert must become capable of
storing water. Plants store water in their roots, stems and leaves.
Animals must also store water. Some animals, such as Gila monsters,
store water in fatty deposits in their tails or other tissue.
Plants
• Have long roots to capture
water under the soil.
• Have needle-shaped leaves
to reduce the loss of water.
• Have hypertrophic stems
to store the water.
• Example: cacti, lithops and
etc.
Animals
• Have long ears or small bodies to
dissipate heat.
• Dissipate heat through
evaporation.
etc.
Camels
• Their hump holds fat, the fat in the
camel can not get food, can be
decomposed into the body needs
nutrients for the survival of the
camel needs.
• There are many bottle-shaped small
bubbles in the stomach of a camel,
the place where camels store water,
and the water in these "bottles"
makes the camels even life-
threatening even if they do not drink
water for days.
