Maps can cover hundreds of miles, so this allows us to narrow down the area on the map
that we need to search.

The most important tool you have


is the key! You will be provided
with a key for any OS map extracts
that you are given. Look closely at
the map and use the key to
identify any landforms that you
are unsure of.
You should also consider the
relationship between human and
physical features. For example,
why a settlement is located where
it is and why tourists could be
attracted to a particular area.
Think carefully about how the
features on the map would look in
real life. For example, are there
any contour lines? Would the
location be hilly, mountainous or
flat?
