Introduction
Carbon sequestration is a natural process by
which carbon dioxide is removed from the
atmosphere and stored in carbon sinks such as
forests, oceans, and soil.
Process of Carbon
Sequestration in Trees
Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere
through tiny openings in their leaves called stomata.
Using sunlight as energy, they convert CO2 and water into
organic molecules like glucose through a series of chemical
reactions. This process is called photosynthesis.
Reduction of CO2
In Calvin cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide is captured
and incorporated into a molecule (3-PGA) that's further
processed into triose phosphate through reduction. The
enzyme responsible for this step is ribulose-1,5-
bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO).
This reduction involves the addition of electrons and
hydrogen ions to the carbon dioxide molecules.

Through a series of enzymatic steps, the reduced carbon

and more overall biomass to store carbon.

Younger trees take in carbon dioxide through

photosynthesis and use it to build wood, leaves, and

Fast-growing trees like poplars can sequester carbon at a rapid rate.

Trees with larger, denser leaves tend to capture more CO2 from the
atmosphere.
Trees that capture the most carbon-
Oak, Silver Maple, Pine, Poplar etc.
Climate Condition

Precipitation, temperature, and light significantly

impact carbon sequestration.

Trees capture carbon dioxide best when it's warm

and rainy.

Tree Planting and Forest
Management

Tree planting and forest management are

crucial for carbon sequestration and climate
change mitigation.
Planting trees can increase forest cover and
create new carbon sinks.
Sustainable forest management practices can
help to maintain healthy forests that can store
Plantation more carbon.
Conclusion

Trees play a significant role in sequestering carbon and

mitigating climate change.

By understanding the mechanisms of carbon storage and

influencing factors, we can develop effective tree planting
and forest management strategies.
