Plant Processes

and Reproduction

SC.912.L14.7
Photosynthesis
The process used by plants to capture light
energy
The plant uses the light to power a chemical
reaction
This reaction converts water and carbon dioxide
into glucose and oxygen:
Equation:
CO2+H2O + ☀️ (light) → C6H12O6+O2
Cellular Respiration
The process that releases energy by breaking
down glucose. Produces ATP.
Equation:
C6H12O6+O2 → CO2+H2O + ATP
Transpiration
- The process by which plants
release water vapor into the air.
- Water vapor is released through
pore in the leaves called stomata
How it works:
- Water is pulled up the stem by
cohesion between water
molecules
- Water also climbs because of
adhesion between water and the
stem wall.
Reproduction
- The primary method of reproduction for most plants is by seeds or spores
- In plants, seeds form as a result of pollination and fertilization
- Pollination is the transfer of pollen from male to female reproductive structures
- Fertalization is the union of male and female sex cells (gametes) to form a zygote
- Zygote = fertilized cell, will become a seed/fruit/cone

Sepal
Pistil (Female)
Parts of a Flower 1.) Stigma: The sticky top of the
pistil where pollen lands
2.)Style: The long part of the pistil
that attaches the stigma to the ovary.
3.)Ovary: This is where the female
gamete, the egg, is made, stored and
protected. The pollen eventually
makes its way here to fertilize the
egg and produce a seed, which is a
“baby plant.”
Stamen (Male)
Parts of a Flower 1.)Filament: The stalk that
holds up the anther..

2.)Anther: Located on the top of

the filament and holds the
pollen.

3.)Pollen: the male sex cell that

will fertilize the egg to make a
SEED
