The Pyramid of the Sun
and the Moon
∙ Located in Mexico in Teotihuacan.
∙ Teotihuacans were built in 200 B.C. for the
Teotihuacán Culture.
∙ Used to sacrifice people to pay homage to their
gods, for example warrior.
∙ The highest part of the pyramids are temple where
sacrifices were made to have a link with the gods.
∙ The outline of the pyramids is very precise and
harmonious.
Teotihuacan Culture

∙ The teotihuacanos had a polytheistic

religion.
∙ Some of the gods they worshiped
were Tlaloc (the god of rain) and
Quetzalcóatl ( The feathered serpent,
god of life, light, fertility,
Civilization and knowledge).
∙ For other cultures Quetzalcóatl had
another meaning.
∙ It is an avenue that crosses the
sacred city vertically, begins at the
pyramid of the moon and ends at
the Citadel and the Tzacualli of
Quetzalcóatl. It measures 45 km
long and 40m wide.
The Pyramid of the Sun
The Pyramid of the Sun is Oriented in the Eastern part of the road of the dead.
The pyramid of the Sun measures 65m of high.
Whose use is unknown.
It has five levels.
It is on a tunnel considered sacred.
Pyramid of the Moon
∙ The pyramid of the moon measures 43m of high.
∙ It is built for Chalchiuhtlice.
∙ Located on the north side of the road of the dead.
∙ Is Smaller than the pyramid of the Sun.
∙ It hasn’t interior chambers.
∙ In this pyramid the people offering to the gods were placed at its base.
Fun Facts:
∙ Further along the road of the dead you can see the temple of Quetzalcóatl.
∙ A few years ago you could climb the steps of the pyramids and temples but seeing
the deterioration of the pyramids due to the mistreatment of visitors and passage of
time, It is prohibited for anyone to climb.
∙ Teotihuacán is recognized as cultural heritage by UNESCO.
