DRAWING

INSTRUMENTS;
USE AND CARE
***THE FOLLOWING ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING MATERIALS ARE ONLY BASIC
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR ARCHITECTURE SYSTEM. OTHER MATERIALS AND TOOLS
WILL BE INTRODUCE LATER ON OTHER COURSES.
DRAFTING TABLE
A drafting table is something that every
sketch artist, drafter, architect should have as part of
their tools and work surfaces. A drafting table is really
just a work table with an adjustable top. It gives the
person using it the ability to change how high or how
low the top is in relation to where they are and how they
intend to work. Drafting tables come with all sorts of
different bells and whistles. You can purchase a drafting
table that has lights, storage solutions and clear glass
work areas.
T-SQUARE
A technical drawing instrument used by draftsmen primarily
as a guide for drawing horizontal lines on a drafting table. It may
also guide a set square to draw vertical or diagonal lines. Its name
comes from its resemblance to the letter T. T-squares come in
varying sizes, common lengths being 18 inches (460 mm), 24 inches
(610 mm), 30 inches (760 mm), 36 inches (910 mm) and 42 inches
(1,100 mm). BUY 36 INCHES T-SQUARE!
It has two components—the long shaft called the "blade"
and the short shaft called the "stock" or "head". The T-square usually
has a transparent edge made of plastic which should be free of nicks
and cracks in order to provide smooth, straight lines.
TRIANGLES
Triangles are precision tools for drawing lines at
specific angles. Triangles are mostly made of plastic,
aluminum, and steel. They are used with a T-square to
drawing vertical and angled lines. A draftsman’s triangle
always has one right angle 90°.
 30/60/90 triangles draw 90° vertical plus 30° and 60°
angled lines.
 45/90 triangles draw 90° vertical and 45° angled lines
 Adjustable triangles draw 90° vertical plus various
angled lines

Choose triangles that has a slant or tilted edge. This will help
in using technical pens to avoid ink blot
MECHANICAL PENCIL
It is a pencil with a replaceable and mechanically
extendable solid pigment core called a "lead“. Mechanical
pencils are used to provide lines of constant width
without sharpening in technical drawing and in quick, neat
writing. Common mechanical pencil and lead thickness or
diameter ranges from 0.2, 0.5 and 0.7.

0.5 diameter is recommendable. Make sure mechanical

pencil and lead has same diameter
TECHNICAL PEN

A specialized instrument used by an architect to make lines

of constant width for architectural drawings. Technical pens
use either a refillable ink reservoir or a replaceable ink
cartridge. A technical pen can be attached to a compass to
produce circles.

0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 line width is recommendable. A set of

three is commonly available (choose 0.1,0.3 and 0.5) and
comes with ink re-filler.
CIRCULAR TEMPLATE
A circle template has labeled cutouts to quickly add precisely
measured circle and arc elements to a drawing without the
aid of a scaled ruler or compass.

FURNITURE TEMPLATE
Architectural templates have standard drafting symbols cut
through them for accurately adding detail to floor pan and
elevation view drawings in deffirent scales. Usually made of
transparent plastic and with symbols for home design,
landscaping, kitchen/bath, plumbing and furniture.

1:100 scale is recommendable

TRIANGULAR SCALE
A specialized ruler designed to facilitate the
drafting and measuring of architectural drawings,
such as floor plans and orthographic projections.
Because the scale of such drawings are often
smaller than life-size, an architect's scale features
multiple units of length and proportional length
increments.

Choose triangular scale with the

following scale:
1:100 1:200
1:250 1:300
1:400 1:500
FRENCH CURVE
A template usually made
from metal, wood or plastic composed of many
different curves. It is used in manual drafting to
draw smooth curves of varying radii. The shapes
are segments of the Euler spiral or clothoid curve.
The curve is placed on the drawing material, and
a pencil, knife or other implement is traced around
its curves to produce the desired result.
