Model of Tree-related High Impedance Fault

of the Rural Areas of Brgy. Buru-un and

Brgy. Ditucalan, Iligan City
Fen Jean-nette V. Barlisan
Introduction
Tree high impedance faults are a
type of fault are caused by the
contact between a tree branch
and a power line. These faults do
not result in a direct short circuit.
Instead, they create a high
resistance connection between
the power line and the ground.
This high resistance can make
these faults difficult to locate.

Causes of Tree High Impedance Faults
Tree high impedance faults in power systems
can occur due to several causes, including:

● Growing vegetation in contact to power

lines.
● Failing equipment

Department of Electrical Engineering 3

Problem Statement

Tree related high impedance faults lead to energy loss and pose a significant
risk in the distribution system. Its can create arcs, potentially causing fires and
endangering people and property.
To mitigate these risks, accurate model of tree related high impedance faults in
the distribution system is crucial for reducing the risk of fires and ensuring
operational system.

Objectives of the Study

1. To develop the THIF model for 13.8kV distribution networks,

2. To determine the threshold value for THIF model for 13.8kV
distribution networks
3. To validate THIF model for 13.8kV distribution networks,
4. To develop a platform for THIF for the distribution networks.

Data Collection

The modelling process begins by collecting data

from different trees located in the rural areas in
Buru-un to Ditucalan, Iligan City on 13.8kV
distribution system. The data gathered will be
used for real measurement of THIF current
through experimental test.

Department of Electrical Engineering 9

Model Structure Selection

Model structure selection refers to the appropriate

model to be the basis for the THIF structure for
the distribution lines in Buruun to Ditucalan areas.

Department of Electrical Engineering 10

Model Parameter Estimation

Parameter estimation stage is a process to

minimize the error between simulated and ideal
data. For this purpose, the ideal HIF data is
compared with simulated data using the model
fault current.

Department of Electrical Engineering 11

Model Validation

The model validation is the process that is

carried out after the created THIF model is
evaluated with the ideal data. It shows the
correlation of the switching time where the THIF
occurs.
