COMMUNICATION:

A process of sending and


receiving either verbal or
nonverbal messages.
It is a process of meaningful
interaction among individuals.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Verbal communication is the


use of words to share
information with other
people, it includes both
spoken and written
communication.
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non verbal communication is


the transmission of message
through a non verbal platform
such as eye contact, facial
expressions, gesture and posture
etc
BARRIER TO COMMUNICATION

When you convey your message to someone or group of people


and the message is not clearly received it is know an barrier to
communication.
 Attacking (criticizing, blaming and shaming.
 Showing ( power ordering, and threatening )
 Other verbal Barrier are shouting name calling and refusals to speak
with the person
Barrier to communication

 Not listen attentively


 Stress
 Avoiding eye contact
 lack of focus
COMMUNICATION AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

 Dysfunctional Communication pattern within the family


contribute to substance abuse .
 Most families with substance abuse problems have trouble
expressing their thoughts and feeling to one another.
There result lead to unhealthy communication.
Why dysfunctional ways of communicating
can contribute to substance use?
 Feeling of disapproval
 Rejection
 Shouting and cursing when angry
 Not talk about their feelings
COMMUICATION SKILLS AND RECOVERY :

 Improving Communication skills is one of the most


important aspect in treatment. It helps repair relationships
that were damaged during substance abuse and helps in
staying in recovery.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
the process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, opinions, knowledge, and data
so that the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose.

 CONSISTENCY
 REFLECTIVE LISTENING
 MUST BE TWO WAYS

 QUESTIONING (kind of information you receive depends on how you ask the
question)
 Show interest/concern
 Encourage problem solving
 LISTENING AND OBSERVING (listen attentively)

WAYS TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION
 Being present and tuned in
 Show understanding
 Listen with respect
 Be interested
 Avoid negative emotion
 Give encouragement
EMOTION AND COMMUNICATION

 Play important role in communication


 Strong feelings/behavior tend to occur when discussing issues such as
substance use,
 Some steps can guide you in communication
 C control your thoughts and emotion
 A Assess and decide if you are to upset to continue
 L Leave the situation if you are too angry or upset
 M Make a plan to deal with situation within 24 hours
ROLE PLAY TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION

 Partner exercises
 Example; now you will find a partner, each of you will think of the last
situation when you had an argument with another person, it may be a person
you are close with, a friend or colleague. Try to recall the details of your
conversation and what happened at the end
 I would like you to recreate this scenario with your partner and apply what
you have learned today.
 After 5 minutes all the participants switch roles
 Ask; How did you find this exercise?
 Allow participants to share.

your non-verbal cues.
