WOUND- ROTOR

MOTOR
BY NATHANIEL MORRISON AND
JONATHAN SIMPSON
What is a wound
Rotor Motor
The wound-rotor motor or slip ring motor is a type of 3 phase
induction motor used for loads that require high starting torque,
smooth starting or variable speeds.

Components

Stators: Similar to squirrel-cage motors.

Rotors: Instead of rotor bars, wound-rotor motors feature a 3- phase star-

connected winding with the same number of poles as the stator.

Slip Rings: Connected to rotor windings through brushes and a resistance

bank for starting.
Starting Mechanism
External resistance in the rotor circuit provides higher starting torque.

Wound-rotor starters, known as secondary resistance starters, gradually

reduce resistance as the motor accelerates.
Performance
Characteristics
Various torque-speed characteristic curves can be achieved by adjusting
external resistance.
Maximum torque is developed at a specific resistance value (R3), with
further resistance changes leading to decreased starting torque.

Starting torque can reach up to about 225% of full load torque, with limited
starting current (~150% of full load current).
Operation and Applications
Rated speed depends on frequency and stator pole count.

Adding resistance in the rotor circuit during operation reduces rotor current and slows
down the motor, providing torque without stalling.

Operating below full speed results in reduced horsepower and efficiency.

Suitable for severe starting conditions and starting under load.

Ideal for applications requiring high starting torque or variable speeds but at the
expense of complexity, cost, and reliability compared to squirrel-cage motors.

Cons of Wound-Rotor Motors:
