What is a wound
Rotor Motor
The wound-rotor motor or slip ring motor is a type of 3 phase
induction motor used for loads that require high starting torque,
smooth starting or variable speeds.
Arrangement of wound rotor motor
Components

Components
Starting torque can reach up to about 225% of full load torque, with limited
starting current (~150% of full load current).
Operation and Applications
Rated speed depends on frequency and stator pole count.
Adding resistance in the rotor circuit during operation reduces rotor current and slows
down the motor, providing torque without stalling.
Ideal for applications requiring high starting torque or variable speeds but at the
expense of complexity, cost, and reliability compared to squirrel-cage motors.
Pros of Wound-Rotor Motors:
High Starting Torque’
Smooth Starting
Variable Speed
Complex Construction
Cons of Wound-Rotor Motors:
Complex Construction
Higher Cost
Lower Reliability
Reduced Efficiency
Limited Applications
