Introduction
This presentation will discuss the
development of a potent nutraceutical
with antibiotic and anti inflammatory
properties. We will cover the procedure
for formulation of this product
What are Nutraceuticals ?

The word "nutraceutical" is a blend of the words

“Nutrition" and “Pharmaceutical", coined in 1989
by Stephan L. De Felice. Nutraceuticals are products
derived from food sources that provide health benefits
beyond basic nutrition. They can include isolated
nutrients, dietary supplements, and herbal products.
Inflammation

Inflammation is defined as the local response of living

mammalian tissues to injury due to any agent.

It is a body defense reaction in order to eliminate or limit the

spread of injurious agent as well as to remove the consequent
necrosed cells and tissues.

It is a complex biological response of body tissues to harmful

stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritant.
It is a protective response.
Etiology of Inflammation

The agents causing inflammation are as follows:

Physical agents:- heat, cold, radiation, mechanical

trauma.
Chemical agents:- organic and inorganic poisons.
Infective agents:- bacteria, viruses and their toxins.
Immunological agents:- cell mediated and antigen-
antibody reactions
Types of Inflammation
Depending upon the defense capacity of the host and
duration of response, inflammation can be classified as:-
 Acute inflammation: It is a short duration and
represents the early body reaction and is usually
followed by repair. It's main features are:
• Accumulation of fluid and plasma at the affected site.

 Chronic inflammation:- It is of longer duration and

occurs either after the causative agent of acute
inflammation that persists for a longer time.
• The characteristics feature of chronic inflammation is
presence of chronic inflammatory cells such as
lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages.
Antibiotics
What is an antibiotic?
"Antibiotic" is from antibiosis, meaning against life. Substances derived
from a microorganism or produced synthetically (Sulphonamides &
Quinolones) to kill or suppress the growth of other microorganisms.

Mechanism of action of antimicrobial agents

1. Inhibition of cell wall synthesis
2. Inhibition of functions of cellular membrane
3. Inhibition of protein synthesis
4. Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis
5. Inhibition of folic acid synthesis
6. Cell death
Licorice
Synonyms : Liquorice, Mulethi
Biological Source: Glycyrrhiza glabra from the family
Leguminosae.
It contains peeled and unpeeled subterranean stems and roots
of Glycyrrhiza glabra.
Mode of Action
liquorice extract, 3 triterpenes and 13 flavonoids exhibit
evident anti-inflammatory properties mainly by decreasing
TNF, PGE2 and free radicals
Fenugreek
Common name methi , menthya
Biological source Trigonella foenum graecum of the family
Leguminosae

Mode of action :
Fenugreek Anti inflammatory activity is mainly due to the presence
of Flavonoids because flavonoids act as antioxidant and potential
inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase and nitric acid synthase.
Fenugreek can counteract inflammation and irritation associated
with inflammatory skin conditions and as anti biotic agent.
Requirements

Extraction of Liquorice Extraction of Fenugreek

Liquorice roots Fenugreek seeds
Acetone Soxhlet
Dilute Nitric Acid N-hexane
Ammonia solution Whatman filter paper
Soxhlet Beaker
Beaker Funnel
funnel Tripod stand
Extraction of Licorice

 Glycryrrhizic acid was extracted by using the method

of maceration.
 For this purpose, drug (licorice roots) powders was
macerated with the solvent mixture of acetone and
dilute nitric acid for 2 hours.
 The contents were filtered and additional 20 ml of
acetone was added to the marc and warmed gently.
 The contents were filtered and filtrate was obtained.
To this filtrate sufficient volume of dilute ammonia
solution was added till precipitation of ammonium
glycyrrhizinate is completed.
 The precipitate was collected and washed with 5 ml of
acetone
 The extract was dried and collected.
Extraction of Fenugreek

 A 100 g of crushed fenugreek seed was extracted using

n-hexane (600 mL) and a Soxhlet extractor for 3 h at
(65–70 °C).
 Then, the mixture of solvent-oil was filtered through a
No.1 paper filter (Whatman).
 The extract was transferred into a round flask and
solvent was evaporated using water bath at 40 °C.
 Finally, the oil extract was stored at 4 °C to prevent
degradation of the compounds
Conclusion
The above study of following potent compound will arise to nutraceutical that will have both anti
inflammatory and antibiotic properties.
Using natural herbs instead of synthetic medicine is more safe and effective
Modern in-vitro studies reveal that fenugreek is a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent that
help fight inflammation.
