WHAT IS A DRUG?
A drug is any substance that is taken into the body that modifies or
affects the chemical reaction in the body.

Fun Fact!
Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered from the fungus,
penicillium, by the scientist Dr. Alexander Fleming.
ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics are chemical substances made by

certain fungi or bacteria that affect the working
of bacterial cells, either by disrupting their
structure or function or by preventing them
from reproducing.

Antibiotics are effective against bacteria but not

against viruses. This is because viruses lack
bacterial features and the antibiotics are
unable to locate and destroy them because
they hide within the host cell.
ANTIBIOTICS RESISTANCE
This is the phenomenon where bacteria evolve and develop the ability
to survive exposure to antibiotics, making these drugs less effective
against bacterial infections.

Causes
1. Unnecessary Use of Antibiotics
Bacteria can mutate after becoming familiar with a certain antibiotic
making them immune to it.
2. Overuse of Antibiotics
Bacteria, again, familiarize themselves with the antibiotic and
mutate.
3. Improper Dosage Duration
Patients don’t finish the full duration of the antibiotic prescription.
This causes some bacteria to be left over, and they mutate.
- MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a bacterium
that is resistant to many antibiotics, which treat ordinary but highly
contagious infections, e.g. flu

- Using antibiotics only when necessary limits the development of

resistant bacteria like MRSA
