GERUND

WHAT IS GERUND?
A gerund is a form of a verb that end with -ing,
that is used as a noun. As you may know,
a verb is a word that refers to actions or states
of being, and a noun is a word that we use to
refer to people, places, things, and ideas.
A gerund is like a blend of verbs and nouns. It
looks like a verb, but it acts like a noun.
For example, the word swimming is an
example of a gerund. We can use the word
swimming in a sentence as a noun to refer to
the act of moving around in water as in
Swimming is fun. When used in sentences,
gerunds are treated as third person singular
nouns (like he, she, and it).
GERUND AS SUBJECT

When the gerund is a noun, it can be the subject of the


action described by the verb.
It has this structure:
Subject [Gerund] + Verb + …
EXAMPLES

Reading a lot is must for every student


Being a nurse is her ambition
Baking is one of my hobbies.
GERUND AS OBJECT

 When the gerund is a noun, it can be the object but it is still a verb
and can have its own object.
 It has this structure:
 Subject + Verb + Object [Gerund] + Object …
 I enjoy shopping with friends
 My sister avoids cooking large dinners.
 The team practiced kicking into the goal.
 We don't mind paying for the car.
 She considered quitting her job.
EXPRESS POSSIBILITY USING “COULD”

 “

 Could" is a modal verb used to express possibility


 Could to show that something is possible, but not certain:

 Examples
 They could come by car.
 They could be at home.
