ENGAGE
What we know about acid and bases?

Level of pH ; 1 to 6
ACIDS
Examples : Lemons, Pineapple, Tomatoes, Vinegar
Level of pH : 8 to 14
BASES
Examples : Medicene, Herbal Teas, Broccoli
WATER Level of pH : 7 (Natural)

Planning and Doing Your Experiment
pH sensor connected to a computer through an interface, which is used to measure the pH level of a
solution during an acid-base titration.
Planning and Doing Your Experiment
The pH sensor helps determine the equivalence point of the
titration, which is the point at which the acid and base have
reacted completely.

Questions
1. Why is it important to know the pH of substances?
2. How does pH affect our health and the environment?
3. What did you observe during the titration?
4. How did the pH change as the titration progressed?
5. Why is it important to accurately determine the equivalence point?
ENHANCE
Citric acid

• helps with stomach troubles and can be used as antacid

• antacids are commonly linked with alkaline substances due

to their capability to neutralize stomach acid

example: effervescent vitamin tablets

Aluminium hydroxide
• one of the base that is useful in many ways such as in
antacids
• it reacts with and neutralizes stomach acid (hydrochloric
acid, HCl)
example: gaviscon, rolaids and tums
Baking soda
• contain sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydrogen
• have been used in baking and also other things like
effervescent tablets (addition of citric acid to facilitate the
effervescent reaction)
baking powder = baking soda + weak acid = carbon dioxide
(causes dough and batters to rise)
Why stomach acid need to be
neutralized?
to reduce the leakage of
substance inside the when the acid leaks stomach acid into the
body that is able to upward through a valve esophagus that will
digest the living tissue into the esophagus will neutralize some of the
around it require some cause the acid reflux or acid as well as to avoid
of it to be neutralized heartburn the esophagus damage
(antacids)

heartburn is a burning feeling in your chest caused by

stomach acid going up into your throat
EXTENSION

a direct titration?

2) Why might a back titration be necessary in certain

analytical situations?
