Hepatoma, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is a type of
liver cancer that can occur in people with cirrhosis. Studies have found that approximately 1-4% of people with cirrhosis will develop HCC each year. The risk of developing HCC is higher in people with certain risk factors, such as hepatitis B or C infection, heavy alcohol use, or exposure to toxins. So, while the overall risk of HCC in people with cirrhosis is relatively low, it's important to be aware of the risk factors and to get regular screening for liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary tumor of the liver and constitutes more than 90% of the primary tumor of the liver. HCC is now the fifth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. The second leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer in men is HCC. Nursing management Some key nursing interventions for patients with HCC include: - Monitoring for signs and symptoms of liver failure and complications, such as ascites, jaundice, and encephalopathy. - Assessing and managing pain. - Educating patients and families about the disease, prognosis, and treatment options. - Providing emotional support and counseling to patients and families. - Coordinating with other members of the healthcare team to ensure patients recovery - Ensuring that patients are up to date on their vaccinations. For example, the hepatitis A and B vaccines are important for patients with HCC, as they can help prevent the spread of these viruses and reduce the risk of liver damage. -In addition, HCC patients should be assessed for nutritional status and provided with a diet that meets their specific needs.
