UNIT 6

Different Contemporary Art

Techniques and Performance
Practices

Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions

1
LEARNING TARGETS

At the end of this unit, the learners should be

able to to do the following:

● Identify contemporary practices in creating art.

● Describe traditional and nontraditional materials used by
contemporary Filipino artists.
● Identify the different materials and techniques used in art.

2
VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, the learners should be able to do the

following:

● Recognize various techniques of artists in different art

forms.
● Justify the use of certain materials and the application of
certain techniques in different art forms.
● Create an improvised artwork using available materials.
ART IS EVERYWHERE

● Materials are the physical components artists use to create artwork.

They serve as the direct interface between the audience and the artist's
message.
● Traditionally, materials were used based on art forms: literary artists
used paper and pen, visual artists used paint and canvas, and
musicians used musical instruments and sheet music.
● Contemporary Filipino artists have progressed beyond these
traditional materials, exploring various resources for new and exciting
artwork.
4
ART IS EVERYWHERE

● Techniques refer to the practices or skills artists employ in the

creation process.
● These techniques can vary based on the type of art, with specific
methods for literature, theater, film, dance, and visual art.
● Both materials and techniques form the foundational elements of an
artwork. Understanding both helps the audience provide an informed
critique and justification for the artwork.

Lesson 1
Materials in Contemporary Arts

Unit 6| Different Contemporary Art Techniques and

Performance Practices
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions

18
CREATIVITY CHALLENGE!
Instructions 10 Minutes
1. You will be divided into groups with five members each.
2. You have 10 minutes to create a visual artwork using the following materials:
● bond paper
● colored paper
● glue
● scissors
● markers and pencils
3. You may select any form of visual art, such as mosaic, collage, mixed media, etc.
4. The art form should be relevant to your group.
5. After the given time, choose a representative from your group to present your artwork in
class.
19
ART LENS

● Materials make visual art more understandable for the audience.

They transform abstract ideas, emotions, and expressions into
tangible forms.
● Materials provide clarity to the message conveyed in the artwork.

● Artists require physical materials to create and work on their art.

● Without materials, the creation of art would be impossible.

20
MATERIALS IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS
● Media or materials in art
are more than just physical
elements; they embody
ideas and knowledge from
diverse peoples and places.

Art Materials

21
MATERIALS IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS
● Material elements
effectively translate
information into a form
that is accessible and
meaningful to the
audience.

Art Materials

22
MATERIALS IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS

● Artists often use readily available materials, which

indicates their significant role as community resources in
artwork creation.
● Local materials, such as bamboo, are commonly used.
"Local" can also refer to the artist's personal context or
location.

23
DIOKNO PASILAN

● Diokno Pasilan’s performance at the Beach International

Environmental Art Festival in the Bicol Region advocated for
environmental awareness.

24
DIOKNO PASILAN

● He painted himself green, symbolizing nature, and interacted

with a bamboo structure and gongs, conveying his message
through these actions.

25
GOING FISHING BY DIOKNO PASILAN

● Bamboo is a readily available material commonly found in

Bagasbas communities, particularly among fisherfolk.
● Bagasbas communities supported Pasilan and other participants in
creating site-specific performances and artworks on the Bagasbas
public beachfront.

26
DIGITAL TAGALOG

● Bamboo was used in Digital Tagalog to construct physical

nodes and produce sounds.
● Artists Maestro and Anading created sounds with Digital
Tagalog, some of which were inspired by and derived from
digitized audio files of National Artist for Music Jose
Maceda.

27
AGNES LOCSIN

Agnes Locsin used techniques of modern dance to

reinterpret a component of the Moriones Holy Festival of
Marinduque.

28
MORIONES BY AGNES LOCSIN

● Moriones was performed in France by male dancers moving

to “Serra Pelada” by the avant-garde composer Philip
Glass.
● It reinterpreted the story through costumes (centurions are
shown without full masks, hefty breastplates, or swords and
spears), and through movements not associated with
classical ballet or folk dances.

29
ANG POST OFFICE BY RODY VERA

● The playwright Rody Vera adapted an Indian play called

The Post Office by Rabindranath Tagore. He retitled it as
Ang Post Office, and it was first staged at the PETA
Center.

30
ANG POST OFFICE BY RODY VERA

● The local staging of Ang Post Office referenced cultural

elements and featured characters such as taho and
sampaguita vendors.
● The music was a fusion of Bengali and indigenous
Filipino sounds provided by the Kilayawan Children's
Choir.
● New production elements included Ellen Ramos's digital
animation and a minimalist bamboo set. 31
OTHER ADAPTATIONS

● Fugtong: The Black Dog – This production revolves

around a folk story about a family ostracized for keeping a
black dog, which is commonly perceived as a bad omen. It
was directed by Rey Angelo Aurelio, who also created the
production Bakata: Battle of the Street Poets, featuring
rapping, dancing, and acting by Smokey Mountain-based
youths.
32
LIMEN BY LANI MAESTRO

● The artist designed Limen as an "antithesis to industrial

space" representing a "landscape of everyday life."
● The space was designed to allow the visitor to
metaphorically blend with the surrounding green space,
seen through a tunnel structure without walls or clear
beginning or endpoints.

2. Each group will be assigned a particular traditional or folk dance from Luzon, Visayas,
or Mindanao.
3. You have 20 minutes to gather all the information you need to arrange a tableau of the
dance assigned to your group. Maximize the materials available to you.
4. After 20 minutes, I will shout “One, two, three, freeze!” and each group must present
their tableau in front of the class.
5. Here are the dances assigned to each group:
● Group 1 (Luzon) – Idaw dance

42
HITMAKER

● Aside from serving as creation tools, materials play a crucial role in

reflecting culture and tradition, and in executing certain art forms,
like dance.
● In the Philippine folk dance tinikling, specific materials are used:
bamboo poles, and traditional outfits for males (barong Tagalog and
red trousers) and females (balintawak or patadyong). The dance is
performed barefoot.
● The materials used in the dance exhibit the richness of Filipino
culture and tradition.
