in the beginning
The exact origin of the guitar is still unknown

ancient Greek word κιθάρα (kithara)

The kithara is said to have been the invention of Apollo

Kitharoidos, or Citharoedus, is an epithet given to Apollo, which


means "lyre-singer" or "one who sings to the lyre”
LUTE 3100 BC – 14TH Century
• any plucked chordophone whose strings are parallel to its belly, or
soundboard, and run along a distinct neck or pole
• Since its first appearance in Europe, the lute has undergone continuous
modifications to keep up with developments in music.
• the most important centers for lute making is the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
• Predecessors of modern date guitar
BAROQUE GUITARS 1600 – 1750 AD
• The Baroque guitar is a string instrument with five courses of gut
strings and moveable gut frets.

• Took the place of lutes

• Lean shape, the back is decorated with stripes and other


designs, narrower
VIHUELA 1750s
• Vihuela, stringed musical instrument that in Spanish Renaissance art
music held the popularity

• most comparable to a ukulele but not the same

• was primarily an Iberian instrument

• popular in Mexico as a feature of mariachi ensembles.

• Became popular in Spain, Portugal and Italy


SPANISH GUITAR 1790s
• The term Spanish guitar has been used differently across the centuries
in different countries.

• Smaller in size compared to a modern guitar

• Popularly called the Romantic guitar

• Franz Schubert
METAL STRING GUITAR LATE 1800s
• “invention” by Antonio de Torres — who is considered to be the father
of the modern guitar

• longer lasting, and louder

• brothers Carl and August Larson made the first durable steel string

• Till now, the flat-top design is the standardized shape for guitar body
ELECTRIC GUITAR 1931-1949
• George Beauchamp, Adolph Rickenbacker

• Electric guitars are simpler than acoustic guitars

• Solid Body Electric Guitar - These are the most popular and widely
accepted versions of electric guitars.

• created out of the need of the jazz bands

• The creation of the electric guitar originated new musical styles such as
Heavy Metal and Rock.
