Earthquakes in 2010 have resulted in nearly 250,000 fatalities. Primarily, the2010 Haiti earthquake caused at least 230,000 deaths to that country, making it the 6th deadliest earthquake in recorded history. Also notable, the 2010 Chile earthquake registered a 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, ranking it the seventh strongest earthquake since 1900. The tsunami associated with the Chile earthquake caused tsunami advisories and warning across the entireOcean rim, also known as the Ring of Fire. To prevent this list from becoming unmanageable, only earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above are included, unless they are notable for some other reason.

THE 2010 CHILEAN EARTHQUAKE

occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile[4] on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), rating a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasting 90 seconds.[5][6] It was strongly perceived in six Chilean regions(from Valparaso in the north to Araucana in the south), that together make up 80% of the country's population. The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VII (Very Strong).[1] Tremors were felt in many Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Crdoba, Mendoza and La Rioja.[7][8]Tremors were felt as far north as the city of Ica in southern Peru (approx. 1500 mi./2400 km).[9] The earthquake also generated a blackout that affected 93% of the country's population and which went on for several days in some locations. The latest death toll as of April 7, 2010 is 486 victims[3] (down from 802 reported by the previous administration on March 3).

struck at a depth of 573.8 kilometres (357 mi) at 10:13 A.M. on February 18, 2010 at the border of China, Russia, and North Korea It had a magnitude of 6.9 MW. The epicenter was 105 kilometres (65 mi) east-southeast of Yanji, Jilin, China, 105 kilometres (65 mi) northeast of Chongjin, North Korea, and 1,095 kilometres (680 mi) northwest of Tokyo, Japan, where it was felt.[3][4]. There was concern that it may be a nuclear test of North Korea, but given the depth, South KoreaForeign Ministry spokesman Kim Young Sun said that the earthquake being caused by such an event was "highly unlikely." [5]

2010 SPAIN EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude on the moment magnitude scale occurred 617 km below the Earth's surface near the southern coast of Spain on 11 April 2010. The epicenter was within the Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada and 25 km southeast of the city of Granada.

2010 BAJA CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE

(also known as 2010 Easter earthquake or 2010 Sierra El Mayor earthquake) was an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the moment magnitude scale that started 26 kilometers (16 mi) south of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi).[3] It occurred at 3:40:41 p.m. PDT(22:40:41 UTC) on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, and it is said to have lasted about a minute and a half. The strongest shaking was felt in the ejido of Alberto Oviedo Mota,municipality of Mexicali, at Mercalli intensity scale VIII (Severe). In Mexicali, Calexicoand Guadalupe Victoria it rated VII (Very Strong), while in San Luis Ro Colorado it measured VI (Strong).[1] Most of the damage in this earthquake occurred in the twin cities of Mexicali and Calexico on the Mexico United States border.[4] At least three people were killed and 100 people were injured.[2]

Drake Passage was struck by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that originated in the Shackleton Fracture Zone. Guizhou was struck by a magnitude 3.4 earthquake on January 18. Landslides caused the death of seven people.[5]

Illinois was struck by a magnitude 3.8 earthquake on February 10, northwest of Chicago. The epicenter of the quake was near the Sandwich Fault Zone, which is less active and less known than the other fault line in Illinois, the New Madrid Fault. Ryukyu Islands were hit by a significantly large magnitude 7.0 earthquake on February 27, seeing no deaths or injuries, but some damage. A tsunami warning was issued for the Naha prefecture. Chile was struck by a catastrophic magnitude 8.8 earthquake on February 27, seeing 300+ deaths in the region. A tsunami alert was waived over all coutries of the Pacific Rim.[6] Salta was struck by a large magnitude 6.3 earthquake on February 28, yet it was completely unrelated to the Chilean Earthquake. At least two deaths resulted from this quak

[8] Indonesia region of Kepulauan Obi was struck by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake on March 14.[9] Honshu was struck by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake on March 14.[10] Biobo was struck by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake at 11:28 P.M. on March 15. New Ireland was struck by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake on March 20. Mindoro was struck by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake on March 25.[11] Atacama was struck by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake at 11:51 A.M. on March 26. The Andaman Islands were struck by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake on March 30.
