 Uric acid product catabolism   Renal handling of uric acid :
purine (adenosine and guanosine)  (1) glomerular filtration
 Purines catabolism dietary and  (2) reabsorption proximal tubule
endogenous nucleic acid. 98% -100%
 (3) subsequent secretion lumen in the
 Daily synthesis rate approximate dista l portion of the proximal tubule;
400 mg  (4) further reabsorption in the distal
 Dietary contribute another 300 mg. tubul e.
 Net urinary excretion of uric acid is
6% to 12% o the amount filtered.

HIPERURISEMIA

 Hyperuricemia defined by serum uric acid > 7.0 mg/dL

in men or >6.0 mg/dL in women.
 Asymptomatic hyperuricemia  requently detected
through screening
 Long-term of follow-up asymptomatic hyperuricemic
 at risk  kidney disease & gout

HIPERURISEMIA

Reference Intervals:
 enzymatic method 
 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dL for males
 2.6 to 6.0 mg/dL for females
 Concentration of serum uric acidincreases gradually
with age
 A rise in women  after menopause reaches similar
to men.
