Movie Clip
I chose the ‘Inch by Inch’ speech by Al Pacino from
the 1999 movie, ‘Any Given Sunday.’

It is a NFL based film where Pacino plays an aging

coach, Tony D’Amato. It is a speech that even people
not interested in American football like it as
describes the struggles not just in sport but in life.

Which are the key words he uses?
D’Amato’s key words are
to give the ownership to
the players. He uses
words like Fight, Team,
togetherness, Inch by
Inch, Play by Play.
‘You find out that life is just a game
of inches. So is football. Because in
either game life or football the
margin for error is so small.’

The Real Message
The real message from this speech
is how we look at each other to
achieve as an individual and as a
team. How we can overcome
anything with the right attitude.
‘Now I can’t make you do it. You gotta look at
the guy next to you who will go that inch with
you.
You are going to see a guy who will sacrifice
himself for his team because he knows when it
comes down to it, you are gonna do the same
thing for him.’
