especially due to a lack of vocabulary.
The researcher plans to link a study on
identifying lexical errors in translating
English texts to Bahasa Indonesia
conducted by Open University
students, focusing on identifying
students' lexical errors in translating
English texts into Indonesian.
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Translation
According to Catford ( 1996:20 ); Newmark (1981:7 ); Larson (1984), Translation is the process of replacing textual material in one
language with equivalent material in another. It involves transferring the meaning of a text from one language to another, using
language theory like general linguistic theory. Mastering this skill is crucial for effective communication and understanding different
languages. Translation involves re-creating a message by replacing words that others can understand, both orally and in writing.

Error
According to Corder ( 1973:260); Norrish (1983:7); Setyawati (2010:13), Errors are learner-specific differences in utterances, often
unrecognized. They are systematic deviations from the target language's accepted system. Errors can be categorized into lexical and
grammatical errors, with lexical errors revealing phonological confusion and grammatical errors dividing into morphology and syntax.

Lexical Error
According to Ellis (2003); El-Farahaty (2016), Lexical errors are the most common category of errors in written English, affecting
academic writing quality. They vary across cultures and have different meanings and functions. Lexical errors are closely related to
words and vocabulary, and lexicographers must include words in dictionaries where necessary.
METHOD
ME T HOD This research was conducted by using descriptive design
with qualitative approach- it was done with consideration
that the objective of this research to identify the lexical
errors in translating English text into indonesian . The
population of this research is students of Open University
(Universitas Terbuka) who take an online tutorial. The
total is 35 students. In this study, the data collection was
based on student’s translation task . The sources of the
material were taken the article published in
thejakartapost.com with the title "Saudis strive to prevent
virus outbreak in curtailed haj.
Results The reseacher analyzes a text containing three
o f t h e r e se a r c h sentences and student’s translation in
Indonesian.
As what has been mentioned above that there are found several words as the errors in three
sentences, the explanation of the errors as in the following (table 1):

The researcher found out the error and types of translation made by the students to
translate English text as a follow:
1) Most of the students were not able to translate English text into Indonesian
language. In this case, they can’t translate the text like as the original language.
2) Some of the students translated the sentence or the paragraph using the
dictionary to know the meaning of the sentence. But, the students didn’t know what
is the real meaning if they not using the dictionary. It made them translated word by
word and the meaning is not complete.
3) Some of the students translate English text into Indonesian word by word. So
that the translation was not correspond with the meaning of the text. Even though
they used a dictionary, but they did not understand the text perfectly.
CONCL U S I O N S

The research found that students often wrongly


order words in sentences due to word-by-word
translation using dictionaries and translation
machines like Google Translate, leading to
incomplete meanings. The researchers hope this
research will be useful for students and teachers,
and for future researchers to use it as a reference and
develop further.
