 Megger is measuring device which measures insulation

resistance (IR) of electrical equipments/circuits.
 What is insulation resistance (IR)??
As Ohm’s law states

V=IR
Current I =V/R --------- (i)
Resistance R=V/I -----(ii)
From (i) it can be said that, “Greater the value of R lesser will be the
current”.
If resistance is very high then flow of current from one part to other part
will be negligibly small (almost zero).
It means one part of electrical circuit will not affect other part of circuit.
i.e. one part is electrically insulated from other part.

 By performing IR test (megger) we get the IR value.
 Where to perform IR test (megger)??
 IR test are being done at the place, where insulation from
one live part is required from other live/earth e.g.

1. Motor- insulation from phase to phase and also insulation

from phase to earth (body of motor)

2. Cables- insulation from phase to phase, phase to neutral, and

also insulation from phase to earth (armors, cable glands,
gland plates etc.) etc.
 Checking of insulation resistance of motors.

• How to do Megger of Motor/How to check

insulation resistance of motors.

• To check IR of motor fist we should know

some details about motors insulations and
winding.

• Steps to check IR
• 1. Connect the leads to the megger as per
color coding.
• Connect the line test lead to winding terminal of motor.
And connect earth test lead to motor body for phase to earth
OTHERWISE
connect earth test lead to other phase for phase to phase .
• Now Take readings.
1. by moving the handle of hand operated megger.
2. by pressing the test button in electronic megger (in
electronic megger ensure voltage setting)
• After checking of IR value ensure discharging of the tested
terminals of motor or cable.??

इन्सुलेशन प्रतिरोध की जाँच करने से पहले हमें क्या एहतियात लेनी

• De-energize and discharge the circuit completely before
connecting a megger test.
मेगर परीक्षण को जोड़ने से पहले पूरी तरह से सर्कि ट को डी-एनर्जाइज़ और डिस्चार्ज करें।
• Disconnect the item being checked from other circuitry, if
possible, before using a megger test.
मेगर परीक्षण का उपयोग करने से पहले, यदि संभव हो तो अन्य सर्कि टरी से चेक किए जा
रहे आइटम को डिस्कनेक्ट करें।
• Never touch the test leads while the handle is being
cranked
