Q1.
The Kc for the Haber Process, is 9.60 at
573 K. Suppose the equilibrium partial pressures for NH3 and H2
are 400. torr and 700. torr respectively. What is the equilibrium
pressure for N2?

Kp = Kc
= 9.60 [(8.314 × 10-2 L bar K−1 mol-1)(573 K)][2-(1+3)]
= 4.23 × 10-3

1 torr = 1.333 × 10-3 bar

= 400. torr = 0.533 bar
= 700. torr = 0.933 bar

Kp =
4.23 × 10-3 =
= 82.7 bar

Q2.(15.88)
The reaction: Kp = 0.0870 at 300oC.
A flask is charged with 0.50 atm PCl3, 0.50 atm Cl2, and 0.20 atm
PCl5 at this temperature.
(a) Determine the direction of the reaction.

(b) What effect will increasing the volume of the system have on
the mole fraction of Cl2 in the equilibrium mixture?

(c) The reaction is exothermic. What effect will increasing the

temperature of the system have on the mole fraction of Cl2 in
the equilibrium mixture?

Q3. (15.96)
Consider the reaction:
Kc = 3.5 ×10-2
If you start with 25.0 mL of a 0.905 M solution of NaIO4 , and then
dilute it with water to 500.0 mL, what is the concentration of H 4IO6-
at equilibrium?

Q4.(16.74)
Codeine (C18H21NO3) is a weak organic base. A 5.0 × 10 M solution
of codeine has a pH of 9.95.
(a) Calculate the value of Kb for this substance.

(b) What is the pKb for this base?

(c) What is the pKa of the conjugate acid?

K w  1.0 1014 at 25 oC

pKa + pKb = 14.00

pKa = 14.00 – 5.79 = 8.21
