Motivation

Motivation, may be regarded as something which prompts, compels and


energises an individual to act or behave in a particular manner at a
particular time for attaining some specific goal or purpose.

NEEDS
 Biological
 Socio-psychological needs
i. The need for freedom or gaining independence
ii. The need for security
iii. The need for love and affection
iv. The need to achieve
v. The need for recognition or social approval
vi. The need for company
DRIVES
A need gives rise to a drive which may be defined as an
aroused awareness, tendency or a state of heightened tension
that sets off reactions in an individual and sustains them for
increasing his general activity level.
MOTIVES
A need gives rise to one or more motives. A motive is a rather
specific process which has been learned. It is directed towards
a goal.
 Hunger Motive
 Thirst Motive
 Sex Motive
 Maternal Motive
 Achievement Motive
Motivation is driving force which stimulates an individual to
initiate and sustain a behaviour.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need
In 1954, Abraham Maslow proposed that a motivational
behaviour may satisfy many needs at the same time. Human
needs arrange themselves in hierarchy.
Deficiency needs vs. growth needs
This five-stage model can be divided into deficiency needs and
growth needs. The first four levels are often referred to as
deficiency needs (D-needs), and the top level is known as
growth or being needs (B-needs).
