GREEN

SKILLS
IX-A

NAME – DEV SHARMA

CLASS – IX-A
ROLL NO. - 9
WHAT IS GREEN SKILLS ?

Green skills are those skills needed to

adapt processes, services
and products to climate change and the
environmental regulations and
requirements related to it. They include
the knowledge, abilities, values and
attitudes needed to live in, develop and
support a sustainable
and resource-efficient society."
Renewable Energy:

The growing demand for energy, coupled

with concerns about climate change, has
increased the importance of green skills in
the renewable energy sector. Individuals
trained in renewable energy technologies
contribute to the transition from fossil fuels
to cleaner and more sustainable energy
sources.
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation:

Green skills are instrumental in addressing climate

change challenges. Professionals skilled in climate
science, adaptation, and mitigation strategies play a key
role in developing and implementing measures to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resilience to
climate impacts.
WHAT IS GREEN ECONOMY ?

A green economy is an economy that aims at reducing

environmental risks and ecological scarcities, and that aims for
sustainable development without degrading the environment 1. It is
closely related with ecological economics, but has a more
politically applied focus.

The 2011 UNEP Green Economy Report argues "that to be green,

an economy must not only be efficient, but also fair. Fairness
implies recognizing global and country level equity dimensions,
particularly in assuring a Just Transition to an economy that is
low-carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive"
LOW CARBON GROWTH

Human activities like burning of fossil fuels (Coal and oil)

have increased the concentration of CO2 and other
greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. This prevents
Earth from cooling at night, thus causing global warming
and climate change. The term ‘Low Carbon Growth’ means
reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). Low
Carbon Growth is now generally used to describe strategies
that are aimed at development plans which will not harm
the environment.
CONSIQUENCES OF CARBON GROWTH
1.Climate Change: Increased CO2 levels contribute to global warming and
climate change12. This is because CO2 is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the
atmosphere2.
2.Extreme Weather Events: Rising temperatures can lead to more frequent and
severe weather events, such as heatwaves, storms, and floods 2.
3.Melting Ice Caps and Rising Sea Levels: Higher global temperatures cause
ice caps and glaciers to melt, which leads to rising sea levels. This can result in
coastal flooding and the loss of land2.
4.Impact on Wildlife and Ecosystems: Changes in climate can disrupt
ecosystems and threaten wildlife, particularly species that are unable to adapt
quickly enough to changing conditions 2.
Green economy in India

India has led by example in moving

towards green economy. It has taken
gradual steps towards a green economy
in the last decade and has tried to
balance it with continuous development.
India aims to address the following three
issues through green economy
initiatives:
•Issues of energy scarcity
•Issues of environmental pollution
GREEN SKILL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMME IN INDIA

Waste Management
Managing waste responsibly is a crucial
component of environmental sustainability.
Green skills include expertise in waste
reduction, recycling, and the safe disposal of
hazardous materials, contributing to a
circular economy that minimizes
environmental impact.
