What is Plastic
Pollution?
Plastic pollution is the accumulation of manufactured plastic goods
that negatively affect humans and wildlife.

With rapid growth and urbanization, Bangladesh faced a sharp increase

in both plastic use and pollution.

Plastic pollution has became a serious problem in

recent years, It is one of the major reasons of global
pollution. Which is also affecting our planet’s marine
life and the cause of imbalancement to our
envoirnment.

3
1.
Identifying
the problem
Identifying the problem is the
first step to solving it.
Plastic is efficient
The invention of plastic has been advantageous in modern
Times. Low cost, versatile, sanitary and easy to manufacture
Into variety of shapes made it attractive to packaging and
Electrical industry.

Plastics are categorized by size into micro, meso, and

micro debris. Plastic is used in a variety of industries
around the world. The main consumer of plastic is
the packaging industry which consumes 36% of
the world's total plastic production.

5
However, plastic has low
degeneration rate. It takes a long
time for plastic to deteriorate,
thus causes pollution of air, soil
and water surfaces.

6

With the low degeneration
rate, overconsumption, and
mismanagement, plastic is
now responsible for climate
change. Bangladesh is no
different from this world
scenario.

7
Chart showing the percentage of plastic consumed by sectors in 2018

The current study looks at the effects of plastic

pollution, particularly microplastics, on the
ecosystem and human health in Bangladesh.

8
In 2018, nearly
6,500 tons of plastic
wastage were
produced daily in
Dhaka city.

9
Causes of Plastic Pollution

• Plastic degradation takes a long

time. It can take 400-500 years
to decompose completely.
Dhaka city produces 645 tons
of plastic every day.

• Only 37% of plastic waste is recycled.

Causes of Plastic Pollution

• Dhaka’s per capita plastic

consumption is 22.25 kg which
is shocking. It is because we use
plastic for various purposes daily.

11
Causes of Plastic Pollution
• Negligence is another and
probably the main cause of
plastic pollution. Plastic is
disposed on lakes, ocean’s or
any water surfaces. The
absence of proper waste
management is a major
reason why plastic pollution is
such a huge problem in Dhaka
city. As a result, the health risk
of citizens increases.
problem can be
devestating if we don’t
take major actions.
⊷ If we look closely, it is virtually impossible to
avoid plastic completely. Modern electronic
devices such as cellphones, smart watches,
screens and many more contain polycarbonate,
(to make them scratch and impact resistant).
⊷ Even medical tools such as surgical gloves,
syringes, insulin pens are made out of plastic.
This are also one-time use products.

13
Microplastics have been identified as
an emerging pollution hazard
because of their pervasive nature and
bio accumulative capability. A recent
study conducted in Bangladesh
reports that microplastics are found
in coarse salt prepared for human
consumption

14
Our oceans are greatly polluted with waste,
most of it being plastic or polycarbonate base
material.

Every year 100 million marine

animals die from plastic waste alone.
They often get entangled in plastic
litter and die.

15
What is the solution?

There is no one word solution to this problem.

Rather solutions and transformative opportunities
exist in the entire value chain plastics: Design,
reduced uses, improve waste management,
behavioral changes, reuse, repair and recycling.

16
Avoid using disposable products

About 90 percent of our daily use plastic

products are for a single-use purpose. Such as
grocery bags, plastic wrap, disposable cutlery,
straws, and coffee cup. Specially plastic bottles.

We have to avoid using this, and find

alternatives like jute-bags or fabric based bag,
and avoiding disposable plates, cutleries, straws
etc.
Stop buying water

Every year, almost 20 billion plastic

bottles are thrown as trash. If we can carry
our own reusable bottles, the amount of
plastic waste will hopefully reduce.

18
Improved
Waste
Management
At present, waste is collected from
both Dhaka's north and south city
corporations. Then they are dumped
into the landfills. So a proper waste
management system is more than
necessary to reduce the risk of health
issues. For that, Bangladesh aims at
reducing 30% of plastic waste by
2030 by using the 3R method (reduce,
reuse, recycle).
Self-awareness
⊷ If we can change our
behavior towards
using plastic and
plastic products, the
pollution will
automatically start to
reduce
