industries environments
The key antecedents of supply chain management in project-
based industries are as follows:
• Planning
• Sourcing
• Production
• Distribution
• Return

PLANNING: This is the most important of the activities as it has a great effect on everything else in the
supply chain process. Here the organization predicts/forecasts customer demands and from such information
make decisions on the manufacturing process, machinery deployment and staffing.
SOURCING: This is the process of getting materials and
components parts required for the manufacturing process.
It is important to have suppliers that can deliver to
required specification at market competitive prices and at
the time the materials are needed. The suppliers should
also be time flexible to accommodate orders that may
come on short notice due to unforeseen circumstances.

PRODUCTION: Transformation of raw materials and

components to finished goods is what happens here with
the use of machinery and labour in accomplishing the
process. Various operations such as assembly,
manufacturing, branding and quality control take place in
this stage of the process.
DISTRIBUTION: Next is the process of delivering products to the
market that is wholesalers, retailers and consumers. An effective
distribution system and logistics is essential in this stage to forestall
shortages that may arise from disruptions like lock downs due to terrible
weather.

RETURNS: This is the final process that deals with customer feedback
as well as any products being returned by the customer. This is also
known as reverse logistics and the company should have a system in
place for receiving returns and also remedy the transaction with
customer through refunds or product replacements.
