Lesson 8.1 Areas of Rectangles and
Parallelograms
1 S T PA R T I A L E VA L U AT I O N
• Ernesto plans to build a pen for his pet
iguana. What is the area of the largest
rectangular pen that he can make with
100 meters of fencing?

Application
Problem 1
The largest rectangular pen that Ernesto can make with 100 meters of fencing will be a square.

Let's represent the side length of the square pen as x meters.

The perimeter of the square pen is given by:

Perimeter= 4 * x

Since Ernesto has 100 meters of fencing, we have:

4 * x = 100 m
Therefore, the side length of the square pen is 25 meters.
The area of the square pen is given by:
Solving X , we get:
X= 100 m / 4
X= 25 m
Area= x2
Area= (25 m)2
Area= 625m2
Application
Problem 2
Sarah is tiling a wall in her bathroom. It is
rectangular and measures 4 feet by 7 feet.
The tiles are square and measure 6 inches
on each side. How many tiles does Sarah
need?
To determine how many tiles Sarah needs to tile her bathroom wall, we need to calculate the area of the
wall and the area of one tile, and then determine how many tiles fit into the total area of the wall.

Convert wall dimensions to inches:

The dimensions of the wall are given in feet:

Length = 7 feet = 7 × 12 inches = 84 inches
Height = 4 feet = 4 × 12 inches = 48 inches

Calculate the area of the wall:

The area A of the wall is:
A = Length * Height = 84 in * 48 in = 4032 in2
Now we have to calculate the area of one tile:
Each tile is a square with side length 6 in:
Area of one tile = 6 in * 6 in = 36 in 2
Calculate the number of tiles needed:
The number of tiles N required is the total area of the wall divided by the area of one tile:

Total area of the wall 4032 in2

N= = 36 in2
Area of one tile

Therefore, Sarah needs 112 tiles to tile the wall.

Application
Problem 3
The Ohio Star is a 16-square quilt design.
Each block measures 12 inches by 12
inches. One block is shown above. Assume
you will need an additional 20% of each
fabric to allow for seams and errors.
Part a: Calculate the area of the red, blue
and yellow patches in a single block
Each Ohio Star block is 12 inches by 12 inches and consists of red, blue, and yellow patches. Let's
assume a typical Ohio Star pattern for a single block to analyze the patch areas:

Red Patches: Typically, the Ohio Star pattern includes 4 red squares (corner squares) and 4 red
triangles, (forming a star around the center). Each red square is 3 in by 3 in (since it divides the 12-
in block into a 4*4 grid). Each red triangle is half of a 6*6 square (formed by dividing a larger 6*6
square into two right triangles).
Red squares: Blue patches: Typically, there are 4 blue triangles
forming the star points
Area of one red square= 3in * 3 in = 9 in 2 Area of one blue triangle= ½ * 6 in * 6 in = 18in 2
Total Area of 4 red squares = 4 in * 9 in = 36 in 2 Total area of 4 blue triangles=
4 * 18 in2 = 72 in2
Red triangles:

Area of one red triangle= ½ * 6 in * 6 in= 18 in 2 Yellow patch: The center square is yellow.
Area of yellow patch=
Total Area of 4 red triangles = 4 * 18 in= 72 in 2 6 in * 6 in = 36 in2

Total area of red patches:

Total red area= 36 in 2 + 72 in 2 = 108 in 2

Part b: Number of Ohio Star blocks
needed to cover 72 in by 84 in
Each block is 12 in by 12 in. The top surface area of a king-size mattress is 72 in by 84 in.

Calculate the number of blocks needed along the Total of number of blocks:
width: Total number of blocks =
Number of blocks along the width = 6 blocks * 7 blocks = 42 blocks
72/12 = 6 blocks

Calculate the number of blocks needed along the

length:
Number of blocks along the length =
84 / 12 = 7
Part c: Fabric required for each
color and for a 15 in border
Total area required for each color in 42 blocks:

Red fabric:

Total red area= 42 * 108 in2 = 4526 in2

Blue fabric:

Total blue area= 42 * 72 in2 = 3024 in2

Yellow fabric:

Total yellow area= 42 * 36 in2 = 1512 in2

Adding 20% extra for seams and errors:

Red fabric:

Total red fabric required= 1.2 * 4526 in 2 = 5443.2 in 2 = 5443.2 / 144 ft 2 ≈ 37.8 ft 2

Blue fabric:

Total blue fabric required= 1.2 * 3024 in 2 = 3628.8 in 2 = 3628.8 / 144 ft 2 ≈ 25.2 ft 2

Yellow fabric:

Total yellow fabric required= 1.2 * 1512 in 2 = 1814.4 in 2 = 1814.4 / 144 ft 2 ≈ 12.6 ft 2
Fabric required for a 15 in border around the top surface of the mattress:

The border extends 15 in beyond the 72 by 84 in mattress on all sides, so the dimensions including the border
are:

Total width with border= 72 + 2 * 15 = 102 in

Total length with border= 84 + 2 *15 = 114 in

The area of the mattress plus border is:

Area with border= 102 * 114 = 11628 in 2

The area of the mattress alone is:

Area of the mattress= 72 * 84 = 6048 in 2

The area of the border alone is:

Area of the border= 11628 in 2 – 6048 in 2 = 5580 in 2 = 5580 / 144 ft 2 ≈ 38.75 ft 2

Adding 20% extra for seams and errors:

Total fabric for border= 1.2 * 38.75 ft 2 ≈ 46.5 ft 2
