SAFETY IN MAIN ENGINE

INTRODUCTION
• The ship’s propulsion engine goes through various loads and stresses from rough

conditions to extreme manoeuvres and breakdowns throughout its lifespan.

• So many safety devices are installed to protect the engine from major damage and

failure to prevent any significant loss or damage to the marine engine.

SOME OF THE SAFETY DEVICES IN
MAIN ENGINE ARE
• Crank case Relief Door

• Scavenge Space Relief Door

• The Starting Air relief valve

• Cylinder head Relief valve

• Flame trap

• Oil mist detector

• Rotation Direction Interlock

• Turning gear interlock

ALARMS SLOWDOWN

Generally 4 Major Types of Protection

Systems are used to secure the
Propulsion Engine

SHUTDOWN INTERLOCK
ALARMS
• Lube oil Low Pressure alarm

• Lube oil sump low level alarm

• Lube oil pump trip alarm

• Standby Lube oil Pump start alarm

• Jacket water high temperature alarm

• Jacket water high temperature alarm

• Jacket water low pressure alarm

• Jacket water pump standby start alarm

• Piston cooling low pressure alarm

• Piston cooling high temperature alarm

• Control air low pressure alarm

• Sealing air low pressure alarm

• Start air low pressure alarm

• Exhaust gas high temperature alarm

• Turning Gear engaged alarm

• Turning gear disengaged alarm

• Turbo charger out high temperature alarm

• Turbocharger in high temperature alarm

• Scavenge high temperature alarm

• Thrust bearing high temperature alarm

Different Slowdown Situations
• Lube oil pressure falls to 1.5 bar

• Camshaft pressure falls below 2 bar

• There is no flow of piston cooling media.

• Oil mist detector or main bearing sensors has been activated.

• Lube oil temperature @inlet of engine is high >60 deg

• Exhaust temp of engine cylinder is high>450 deg

• Jacket water cooling temperature is high>88 deg

• Scavenge air temperature of engine is high>65 deg

• Thrust block temperature is high>75 deg

• Low flow of cylinder lube oil

• Control air pressure is low <5.5 bar

MAIN ENGINE SAFETY TRIPS

• Main engine safety trip which trips the main engine when no corrective action is
taken to the alarm and in certain cases the main engine is tripped manual.

• Manual tripping of main engine is done in chance of the collision or grounding of

the ship when sailing in congested water and in navigation of the ship in restricted
visibility .

• So when any main engine trips are activated the Main engine stops and again it
should be started with the help of starting air after correcting the faults.
SOME OF THE MAIN ENGINE TRIPS ARE:
• Over Speed Trip

• Low Lube oil pressure Trip

• Cam shaft Lube oil low pressure Trip

• Jacket cooling water low pressure Trip

• Piston cooling water low pressure Trip

• Thrust Bearing High pressure Trip

• Main bearing high pressure and temperature Trip.

• 0il Mist Detector alarm

INTERLOCKS

• Turning Gear Engage Interlock

• Running Direction Interlock

• Auxiliary Blower Off Interlock

• Starting Air Distributor In end Position Interlock

• Air Spring Pressure Interlock
