Classification of Sentences by Types
 Declarative Sentences
Statement, declarative or assertive sentence is a sentence that is informative and
ends with a full stop.
Example
1. My computer is broken
2. Database administrators create, upgrade, and test for databases.

 Imperative Sentence
An imperative sentence is a sentence that expresses a command,
an order, or a request
Example
1. Turn on the computer
2. Do your assignment
 Interrogative Sentence
An interrogative sentence is one that is used to question something
and it ends with a question mark.
Example
1. What is the name of the movie you were watching?
2. Could I repair your mobile phone?

 Exclamatory Sentence
An exclamatory sentence is one which is used to express sudden and
strong emotions, and it ends with an exclamation mark. You can also
use interjections to form exclamatory sentences.
Examples:
Wow, how good this is!
That was a great match!
Classification of Sentences by Number of Full Predication
1. Simple Sentences
The man stole Ani’s computer
Such sentences have only one full predication in the form of an independent clause.

2. Compound sentences
The man stole Ani’s computer and she hid it in her home.
Such sentences have two or more full predications in the form of independent clauses.

3. Complex sentences
The man who stole the computer hid it in her home
Such sentences also have two or more full predications. One of these is an independent clause (or,
main clause) that is similar to the form of the simple sentence, and one or more of these are
dependent clauses (or, subordinate clauses).

4. Compound-complex sentences
The man stole the jewelry and she hid it in her home until she could safely get out of town.
Compound-complex sentences contain two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent
clauses.
Based on the internal structure of the main clause, sentence can be divided into:

1. Complete sentence

A complete sentence must begin with a capital letter, end with a punctuation mark, and
consist of at least one main clause.

a. My sister is teaching English grammar in the classroom now


b. The story book was finished by Sue last night
2. Incomplete sentence

There is a sentence with a complete structure, in the sense that all components must be
present, and there is a sentence with an incomplete structure (Mulyono, 2018).

Based on the nature of the actor-action relationship, a sentence can be divided into
an active and passive sentence.

1. Active sentence

The active sentence can be categorized as a simple sentence or a complete


sentence. An active sentence consists of subject and predicate.

a. Roy is studying English


b. The students did the presentation
2. Passive sentence
The passive sentence or passive voice is one of the types of sentence that is
complete by the object.

c. English is being studied by Roy


d. Many English courses were given during the holiday last week
