Expander is used to decrease the pressure of a high inlet gas stream to

produce an outlet gas stream with low pressure and high velocity. A
mixture of Natural Gas (Methane 50%, Ethane 30%, and Propane 20%)
at 25 C and 20 bar is fed into an expander with an Isentropic efficiency of
50%. The flow rate of the natural gas is 100kgmol/h and its outlet
pressure from the expander is 5 bar. Using Peng-Robinson EOS as a fluid
package, determine the outlet temperature of the natural gas.
If the outlet temperature is -30 C, What is the expander’s efficiency?

A Refrigeration cycle utilizes propane as the working fluid used in the
liquefaction of the NG. Propane is fed to an evaporator (Heater) the
pressure drop=5 kPa, where it absorbed 1.50e+6 kJ/hr from the NG and
leaves at the dew point (Vapor Fraction=1.0) at T= -15 C. The output of the
evaporator is then compressed adiabatically with an efficiency of 75%, and
then it's condensed to reject heat. Inside the Condenser, there is a
pressure drop of 30 kPa and leaves as a saturated liquid at 45 C. Finally, the
propane passes through a valve to return the pressure of the Evaporator.
Calculate the COP (Coefficient of Performance) for the cycle using a
spreadsheet
(COP = Evaporator Duty / Condenser Duty)
Short-cut Distillation
The Shortcut Column performs Fenske-Underwood shortcut
calculations for simple refluxed towers.
Fenske: minimum number of theoretical stages
Underwood: minimum reflux ratio.
 A specified reflux ratio can then be used to calculate the vapor
and liquid traffic rates in the enriching and stripping sections, the
condenser duty and reboiler duty, the number of ideal trays, and
the optimal feed location.
Short-cut Distillation
A feed mixture (saturated liquid) consisting of 60 mol% methanol
and 40 mol% water is fed to the distillation column at 5 bar, at a
flow rate of 1000 kg mol/hr.
The % purity of methanol required in the top product is 99 mol%
(liquid), and that of water in the bottom product is 99 mol%.
The pressure in the condenser is 4.8 bar, while in the reboiler is 5
bar.
Estimate
Number of trays
Minimum Reflux Ratio
Condenser and reboiler temperature
