Introduction

Dali Schonfelder is a 19 years-old girl from the

Netherlands, she is a co-founder of Nalu, a clothing
line, to fund school uniforms for children living in
rural India.
I wanted to find out how Dali was able to create
Nalu as my Research question and Who is Dali
Schonfelder and how did she become aware to the
education problem she is dealing with as my sub-
questions.
I chose Dali because I think she is doing something
amazing and meaningful for the world and to do so
at such a young age is something to adore.

Dali was born in the Netherlands in 2002, she had a

normal life, her family were financially stable and she
grow up with out being aware to the problem she is
coping with today. But it all changed when Dali was 12,
her parents decided to take her and her brother out of
school for a whole year and see the world. While being
in India Dali made many friends there and ever since
that year Dali and her family is Traveling to rural India
each year.
One year, she returned to find that her friends were
not in school anymore because the government had
stopped paying for some of her friends uniforms after
they reached 12 years old, and Since students were
forbidden to attend school without uniforms, those
who could not afford uniforms could no longer receive
an education, this is how Dali became aware to the
education problem in the world and Together with her
younger brother decided she wanted to break the
poverty cycle and give every child what actually
already his, the right for education.
The right for education has been recognized as
a human right in a number of international
conventions, and it is states: “Everyone has the right to
education. ... Technical and professional education
shall be made generally available and higher education
shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.”
and more than 1 billion kids around the world don’t
get that right.

After Dali and her brother decided they wanted to

create Nalu with the idea of creating a clothing
line, the first thing they had cope with is how to
get money together for the clothes, their first idea
was to ask from their family and friends but they
had some problems with that idea, so with the
little money they had, they started the
development of Nalu and saving as much money
as they could, like Dali designed the first Nalu
clothes and saved money on a designer, and they
also came up with a system, with every purchase
of 4 Nalu products, a uniform is given to a child
who needs one.
And step by step, after they sold their first few
clothes, they went to their first giving trip to India
in 2015 and gave a grand total of 3 sets of
uniform.
And as of Fall 2017 they have given 6,680 school
uniforms and just kept growing ever since.
Their goal is to give 1 million school uniforms by
2025.

Conclusion

The purpose of my project is to raise the awareness

of how big and important is what Dali is doing and
make people understand that to know how to read
and write is not something to take for granted
although it should be.
While doing this project, I learned that over 1 billion
kids around the world don’t know how to write and
read which is a number that I was shocked to
discover and the actual massive contribution of
school on each of our lives.
Dali was able to create Nalu by putting Nalu at her
top priority, doing what ever needed to be done,
planning every step in the way and putting goals to
herself and never stop trying to get better.
