COMSOL – Micro Heat Exchanger

Computer Workshop CHEE3021

Department of Chemical &
Environmental Engineering

1
Example: Micro Heat Exchanger
• The following example builds and solves a
conduction and convection heat transfer problem
using Non-Isothermal Flow Multiphysics. The
example concerns a heat exchanger, which you
can find in in micro reactors such as for micro-fuel
cells. This application examines the heat
exchanger in 3D, and it involves heat transfer
through both convection and conduction. Steady
state condition is assumed.
2
• The geometry of the heat exchanger is shown
below:

3
• Parameters:

4
Physics
• Model wizard -> 3D
• Select physics -> Fluid flow -> Non-isothermal
flow -> Laminar flow
• Study -> Stationary
• Done

5
Definitions
• Set parameter as follows:

6
Geometry
• Change units in geometry to µm
• On geometry -> workplane
• Locate plane definition -> zx-plane

7
• From plane geometry -> Rectangle
