ALS

LEARNING MODALITIES
• The Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the
Philippines serves as a crucial platform for
individuals who have not completed formal
education. Recognizing diverse learning needs,
ALS employs various modalities to reach a
wide audience.
•Face to Face – In person sessions
conducted by ALS facilitators to provide
direct interaction and support learners.
• In face-to-face classes at the Alternative Learning System
(ALS), students engage in traditional classroom settings where
they interact directly with teachers and peers.
• Face-to-face classes typically involve in-person lectures,
discussions, and interactive activities to facilitate learning. This
approach allows for immediate feedback, real-time interaction,
and a more personalized learning experience compared to
online alternatives.
•Radio - Based Instruction – Educational
content broadcasted through radio program,
reaching learners in areas with limited
access to traditional classrooms.
• In ALS, radio-based classes involve delivering educational
content through radio broadcasts. This approach is particularly
beneficial for reaching remote or underserved areas where
access to traditional classrooms may be limited. Students tune
in to scheduled radio programs that cover various subjects.
These broadcasts often include lectures, discussions, and
instructional content. It's an innovative method to provide
education to those who may face geographical or logistical
challenges in attending face-to-face classes.
•Computer Based Instruction – Provides ICT–
enhanced educational opportunities for
Filipino OSC, OSY, and OSA, learners use
ALS digitized learning modules that are
Interactive and self-paced.
• In ALS, computer-based instruction involves using technology to deliver
educational content. Students utilize computers or other technological
devices to access and learn their lessons. This method often includes
online modules, multimedia presentations, and various digital materials.
While embracing a more modern approach to teaching, computer-based
instruction in ALS can still incorporate aspects of traditional classes,
such as offline activities or assessments. This format provides
opportunities for personalized learning and hands-on experience with
technology, catering to the diverse needs of learners in the Alternative
Learning System.
• Independent Learning – (Print-based
module) Learners have their own choice of
flexible time in learning, materials used by the
learners are integrated, self-instructional, self-
paced, and indigenized
• Independent learning in ALS empowers students to be self-directed in
their education. Learners are given self-paced materials and
resources, allowing them to study at their own speed. This approach
encourages activities such as self-guided reading, research, and
project work, fostering critical thinking and autonomy. While some
support from teachers or facilitators may be available, the primary
focus is on students taking responsibility for their learning journey.
Independent learning in ALS offers flexibility, allowing individuals to
tailor their learning experience to suit their pace, preferences, and
unique needs within the Alternative Learning System.
•Television Instruction – Broadcasting
educational content via television for
visual learning experience.
• Television instruction in ALS involves delivering educational content
through television broadcasts. Students tune in to scheduled programs that
cover various subjects, including lectures, discussions, and instructional
materials. This method utilizes the visual and auditory elements of
television to convey information. While lacking direct interaction,
television instruction in ALS reaches a wide audience and is particularly
effective in areas with limited access to traditional classrooms. It provides
an additional avenue for individuals to receive education, especially in
remote or underserved areas, contributing to the inclusivity goals of the
Alternative Learning System.
•Mobile teachers-
ALS Facilitators who travel to
remote areas, bringing education
directly to learners.
• Mobile Teachers in ALS represent an innovative
and community-focused approach to education,
reaching learners in remote areas and addressing
barriers to traditional schooling by bringing the
benefits of education directly to the doorstep of
those in need.
•Community Learning Centers –
Establishing local centers where
learners can access resources, attend
classes, and receive support.
• Community Learning Centers in ALS serve as
dynamic educational hubs that extend beyond
traditional classrooms, providing resources,
support, and a collaborative environment to
foster continuous learning within local
communities.
