Introduction
 Machine Learning (ML) is a sub-field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which
concerns with developing computational theories of learning and building
learning machines.
 Machine learning has been recognized as central to the success of Artificial
Intelligence and it has applications in various areas of science, engineering and
society.
 The goal of machine learning, closely coupled with the goal of AI, is to
achieve a thorough understanding about the nature of learning process (both
human learning and other forms of learning) about the computational aspects
of learning behaviors, and to implant the learning capability in computer
systems.

3
 General Motivation
 Machine learning is the science of getting computers to act without being
explicitly programmed.
 In the past decade, machine learning has given us self-driving cars, practical
speech recognition, vastly improved understanding of the human genome.
 Machine learning is so pervasive today that you probably use it dozens of times
a day without knowing it.
 Many researchers also think it is the best way to make progress towards
human-level AI.

 General Objective of Machine Learning

 It is much easier to quickly analyze complex mathematical calculations more
accurately and efficiently.

4
 The goal of this technology is to help avoid any potential mistakes, make
pre5dictions, and more.
 Machine learning will dramatically impact many different industries such as
finance, health, and media by delivering faster results on a much larger scale.

 Specific Objectives of Machine Learning

 To be able to formulate machine learning problems corresponding to different
applications.
 To understand a range of machine learning algorithms along with their strengths
and weaknesses.
 To be able to apply machine learning algorithms to solve problems of moderate
complexity.

5
 Detail Description about Machine Learning
 Machine learning is an application of AI that enables systems to learn and
improve from experience without being explicitly programmed.
 Learning is a phenomenon and process which has manifestations of various
aspects.
 Roughly learning process includes (one or more of) the following:
 Acquisition of new (symbolic) knowledge.
 Development of motor or cognitive skills through instruction and practice.
 Discovery of new facts and theories through observation and experiment.

 Advantage of Machine Learning

 It is automatic: In machine learning, the whole process of data interpretation
and analysis is done by computer.

6
 It is used in various fields: Machine learning is used in various fields of life
like education, medicine, engineering, etc.
 It can handle varieties of data: Even in an uncertain and dynamic
environment, it can handle a variety of data. It is multidimensional as well as a
multitask.
 Considered best for Education: Machine learning is considered best for
education as education is dynamic and nowadays smart classes, distance
learning, and e-learning for students have increased a lot.
 Disadvantage of Machine Learning
 Chance of error or fault is more
 Data requirement is more
 Time-consuming and more resources required
 More space required
7
 Related works of Machine Learning
 Statistics:-A long-standing problem in statistics is how best to use samples drawn
from unknown probability distributions to help decide from which distribution
some new sample is drawn.
 Psychological Models:- Psychologists have studied the performance of humans
in various learning tasks.
 Artificial Intelligence:- From the beginning, AI research has been concerned
with machine learning. Samuel developed a prominent early program that learned
parameters of a function for evaluating board positions in the game of checkers.
 Evolutionary Models:- In nature, not only do individual animals learn to
perform better, but species evolve to be better but in their individual niches.

8
 Application Area
 Social Media Services:- From personalizing your news feed to better ads
targeting, social media platforms are utilizing machine learning for their own
and user benefits.
 Videos Surveillance:- The video surveillance system nowadays is powered by
AI that makes it possible to detect crime before they happen.
 Online Customer Support:- A number of websites nowadays offer the option
to chat with customer support representative while they are navigating within
the site.
 Online Fraud Detection:- Machine learning is proving its potential to make
cyberspace a secure place and tracking monetary frauds online is one of its
examples.

9
 Examples of machine learning
 Machine learning is relevant in many fields industries and has the capability to
grow over time. Here are six real-life examples of how machine learning is
being used.
 Image recognition
 Image recognition is a well-known and widespread example of machine
learning in the real world.
Real-world examples of image recognition:
 Label an x-ray as cancerous or not
 Assign a name to a photographed face (aka “tagging” on social media)
 Recognize handwriting by segmenting a single letter into smaller images
 Speech recognition
 Machine learning can translate speech into text.
10
 Certain software applications can convert live voice and recorded speech into a text
file.
Real-world examples of speech recognition:
 Voice search
 Voice dialing
 Appliance control
 Medical diagnosis
 Machine learning can help with the diagnosis of diseases.
Real-world examples for medical diagnosis:
 Assisting in formulating a diagnosis or recommends a treatment option
 Analyze bodily fluids
 Statistical arbitrage
 Arbitrage is an automated trading strategy that’s used in finance to manage a
large volume of securities.
11
Real-world examples of statistical arbitrage:
 Algorithmic trading which analyses a market microstructure
 Analyze large data sets
 Identify real-time arbitrage opportunities

 Evaluation results
 Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides
systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience
without being explicitly programmed.
 If we were to list the technologies that have revolutionized and changed our
lives for the better, then machine learning will occupy the top spot.
 This cutting-edge technology is used in a wide variety of applications in day-
to-day life.

12
Conclusions
 Machine Learning Theory is both a fundamental theory with many basic and
compelling foundational questions, and a topic of practical importance that
helps to advance the state of the art in software by providing mathematical
frameworks for designing new machine learning algorithms.
 Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that
provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from
experience without being explicitly programmed.
