BS5628-3:2005
Code of Practice for use of Masonry
Empirical Formula from BS5628-3:2005

Clause 5.2.4 from BS5628-3:2005

BS5628 (Part 3) Clause 5.2.4 (b)
 Wall is restrained at both ends and at the top
 MultiGips wall thickness t = 100mm

t > L / 40 L ≤ 4000 &

& t > H / 90 H ≤ 9000

t > L / 40 L ≤ 4000 &

& t > H / 90 H ≤ 9000
Actual Site Condition for
Proposed MultiGips wall for HKAA-T2
t = 100
H = 6000
L = 11500

Shop Drawing 01 provided by Kwai Tai Engineering Ltd.

Case 3 of BS5628 (Part 3) Clause 5.2.4 (b)

t = 100
H = 6000
L = 2000

t = 100
H = 4000
L = 8000

t = 200
H = 6000
L = No restriction
Discussion:
Clause 5.2.4 (b) is an empirical formula applicable for normal masonry wall design & construction:
 No specific Design Calculation is required
 Applicable to different kind of masonry materials
 For internal partitions or partitions not designed for imposed loading
 Nominal lateral load due to normal human activities only
 Applicable to project with minimum or without engineering inputs
 For houses or low-rise construction

To conclude, BS 5628 is a simplified version of the code mainly for the above purpose. It contains
NO design guideline as opposed to

 Alternative engineering approach
according to BS5628-1:2005
 More accurate approach for local
stress analysis
 Establish actual site conditions
 With consideration of braced wall

3D Finite Element Model Result

 Actual stress is within the design
stress of MultiGips wall
 Max. spacing of top support is 2m c/c
 The lateral deflection is within the
general design limit for masonry wall
 Therefore, the proposed MultiGips
wall is structurally sound &
stable.

Conclusion
 BS5628-3:2005 Clause 5.2.4 (b) provide general guidance for Masonry Wall design. However,
MultiGips wall system is an advanced proprietary product. An alternative engineering approach
according to BS5628-1:2005 is more proper and appropriate approach to address the actual
condition and specific properties of MultiGips system.
