Abbe illumination, which is sometimes called critical illumination, images the source directly onto the
object to be illuminated. It is used in the cases when the source is sufficiently uniform for the system
requirement
In the case of a small bright, highly nonuniform source, such as an arc or a filament lamp, uniform
brightness at the image is achieved with another form of illumination known as Köhler illumination. an
illumination relay lens or condenser lens images the source into the pupil of the projection lens rather
than onto the object being projected.
There are many different terms that are related to the coupling of the light from the source to the screen. These
terms are the optical invariant, etendue, light-gathering power, throughput, angle to area, and area-solid angle
product.
Optical invariance is the property of an object or pattern that remains the same regardless of certain
changes in its appearance, such as changes in its orientation, scale, or illumination. This property is
important for visual recognition, as it allows us to identify objects or patterns under varying conditions.
For example, a person can recognize a letter "A" regardless of its size, orientation, or the lighting
conditions in which it is presented. This is because the letter "A" has certain optical invariances, such as
its overall shape, the presence of the horizontal and diagonal strokes, and the angle between them.
Optical invariance is a key concept in computer vision and image processing, where it is used to develop
algorithms that can recognize objects or patterns in images under different conditions. One approach to
achieving optical invariance is to use features that are invariant to certain transformations, such as
rotation, scaling, or translation.
