Architectural Design IX

GROUP MEMBERS:
Kashmala Kanwal, Maryam Shafique
STAGE: 02
• DERIVATION PROCESS FROM A NATURAL FABRICATION TO A DESIGN MODULE
• MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS
• STRUCTURAL SPECIFICATIONS
• STUDY OF RELEVANT CASES
Project Type:
The project is to design A seating Space.
Inspiration
Inspired from the bird nest, irregular woven by
birds. Depicting through using sustainable
material bamboo as a structural material and
covering it with the irregular hand-woven straws.

Site
The location of the site is in the Bagh-e-Jinnah. And the reason for the selection of the site is due
to the availability of library in that park. There is no outdoor seating area designed where anyone
can sit and read the book.
SITE ANALYSIS
Location:
The site is located in front of
the Quaid e Azam library
building.
Conclusion:
The site is peaceful and require seating area where people sit
within the nature and enjoy its benefits.
Beneficial for the library users.
It is surrounded by shady trees require an enclosed siting
area.
The access for the site is not maintained. Mud path is
present which is not in a proper condition.
The pathway along the structure can be designed.
Material Used
These are the following materials which
will be used in this reading space design;

• Bamboo (structure material)

• Irregular Woven bamboo
• Water proofing sheets
Material And Structural Specifications
Bamboo
• Bamboo is a versatile, strong, renewable, affordable and environmentally friendly material.
• Bamboo has been traditionally used as a building material and in present times used in low cost
housing, building temporary structures and other indigenous architectural expressions.
Bamboo as a Structure Material
• Bamboo is an extremely strong fiber with twice the compressive strength of concrete, and roughly
the same strength to weight ratio of steel in tension.
• Abundant, sustainable, and extremely resilient
• The structural advantages of bamboo are its strength and light weight whereby properly
constructed bamboo buildings are inherently resistant to wind and earthquakes. Properties.
Irregular Woven Bamboo
• It is hand-woven material
• Easily affordable material
• Light weight material
• Environmental friendly

Water Proofing Sheets

• A waterproofing membrane is a thin layer of
water-tight material that is laid over a surface.
This layer is continuous and does not allow
water to pass through it.
• These membranes are composed of thin layers
of waterproof material. Most are about 2 to
4mm thick.
• waterproofing membrane are strong, flexible,
tear-resistant and elastic so that it can stretch to
cover cracks and also move with the building.
Case Study: Timber Nest Meeting Room At Baya Park Offices
Location:
Baya park offices, Mumbai
Designed by:
Planet 3 Studios
Introduction
• A wooden pod resembling the woven
structure of a bird's nest is used for
meetings at this sales area for a
property development in Mumbai
and suggested incorporating it into
the building's lobby.

• The designers produced a space that

meets the practical requirements of
a public reception while providing
private meeting spaces, including a
nest-like structure influenced by the
birds
Materials used:
• The nest is constructed from a curving frame
of plywood ribs that narrows as it nears the
ceiling and is clad in strips of pine salvaged
from inside shipping containers.
• Its organic form provides a sculptural
presence in the lobby, while the woven
surface lets daylight from the adjacent
windows filter into the interior.
Design Of Meeting Room

• As a room on the floor plan, it serves the

programmatic requirement of meeting space
but transcends that by becoming an iconic
object that reiterates the brand identity in a
compelling fashion.

• The voluptuous form uses the advantage of

a fairly empty floor plan and 15' ceiling
height to turn and twist in a way that makes
it visually interesting from all around.
Conclusion:

This structure is derived from the

concept of the company.
This structure adds an interesting element in
reception and make it appealing for the
visitors. By using the natural materials made it
environmental friendly and cost effective. The
structure is quite irrelevant.
