Carbon Monoxide
● Carbon monoxide (chemical formula CO) is a poisonous, flammable gas
that is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and slightly less dense than air.
● It is produced due to incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel due to
less supply of oxygen.
● Inhaling carbon monoxide is toxic to humans as it binds permanently to
haemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing the transport of oxygen around
the body.
● Heating systems should be regularly checked to
Methane
RELEASE OF CARBON DIOXIDE
INTO THE ATMOSPHERE
● Carbon dioxide is released due to complete combustion of fossil
fuels.
● Fossil fuels are used to produce electricity and are used as a basis
in many forms of transport.
● For example:
CH4 + O2 → CO2 + 2H2O
Methane + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
RELEASE OF METHANE INTO THE
ATMOSPHERE
● Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas whose levels in the atmosphere have
been increasing over recent years
● Its sources are waste gases from the digestive processes of animals, such
as cattle, decomposition of vegetation, bacterial action in swamps, rice
paddy feels and landfill sites.
● It also has adverse effects: it increases global warming, which leads to
climate change.
