PHARMACOLOGIC INTERVENTION

Misoprostol and Mefipristone

- Mefipristone is a drug that can cause an abortion in an early part of the


pregnancy. Mefipristone blocks a natural substance, progesterone, that is
needed for the pregnancy to continue.
- It is usually used together with another medicine called Misoprostol.
- This medicine should not be taken if the patient have a rare abnormal
pregnancy that is outside the womb for it will not cause an abortion. It
may cause.
- It is taken by mouth, usually by single dose, after taking the medicine,
you should wait 24 to 48 hours before taking Misoprostol by mouth as a
single dose.
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
• The medical management for Spontaneous Abortion generally
involves;
SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
• Spontaneous Abortion, which is the loss of pregnancy without outside intervention before 20 weeks gestation.
There are two options for Surgical Management using:

• Dilation and Curettage (D&C) which is a minor surgical procedure to remove tissue from the uterus. It is
usually an outpatient procedure so the patient can go home the same day.
• Dilation of the Cervix - It opens the cervix
• Curette - the provider uses a thin instrument to scrape the uterine wall and remove tissue
• Machine Vaccum Aspiration - A common procedure used in 5 to 12 weeks of pregnancy . MVA involves the use
of a thin tube or cannula that is attached by tubing to a bottle and a pump, which provides a gentle vacuum.
The cannula si passed into the uterus, the pump is turned on, and the tissue is gently removed from the uterus.
• A normal recovery includes:
• Irregular bleeding for the first two weeks.
• Cramps, similar to menstrual cramps. These may be present in several hours or possible for few
days.
NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT
• A nutritious diet to aid healing process and re-growing the womb
lining. And eating will help the patient feel better, eating good meals
will boost energy
• Fiber- Some women can experience side effects after abortion such as
nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. To relieve the symptoms because of
hormonal changes, intake of Fibre will help.
• Protein, Iron, B Vitmanins and Calcium- To recover muscle mass, to replace
the blood loss and to give enough energy.
• Fluid- Drinking fluids such as water, helps prevent dehydration and it helps
the body to recover from the abortion.
Nutritional Management

• Avoid foods that can aggravate the condition of the patient


• Watch out for Digestive Side effects - Nausea, constipation and such can occur
after an abortion, this happens because of the hormonal changes.
• Eat the right nutrients- Important for healing.
• Enjoy comfort foods - Take a rest and take care of yourself as much aws
possible.
• Drink plenty of water- Staying hydrated is essential for the body.
• Get plenty of Energy- For the body to heal faster.
